The Spirit of Remembrance Day “Face it”

What is Remembrance Day?

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE The Spirit of Remembrance Day "Face it" We Shall Keep the Faith Remembrance Day red poppy Poppy Day November 11 Moina Michael John McCrae In Flanders Fields First World War November 11 is Remembrance Day. It is sometimes known as Poppy Day. Remembrance Day is a memorial day for Commonwealth of Nations’s armed forces who died in the First World War(1914-1918). They carried out their mission by strenuous effort. Do you know what the symbol of this is? It is a Remembrance poppy. Surprisingly, It is a artificial flower. Why is this? It is due to the poem “In Flanders Fields” written by Canadian John McCrae, MD, physician.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE The Spirit of Remembrance Day "Face it" We Shall Keep the Faith Remembrance Day red poppy Poppy Day November 11 Moina Michael John McCrae In Flanders Fields First World War     When one person read this poem, Moina Michael, a professor at the University of Georgia, swore to wear a red poppy. So people started to wear a red poppy on Remembrance Day. She wrote one poem which was filled with everything. It is a “We Shall Keep the Faith“.

We Shall Keep the Faith

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet – to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.

We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.

And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We’ll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.

“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”
– Thomas Campbell, Hallowed Ground

The spirit of Remembrance Day

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE The Spirit of Remembrance Day "Face it" We Shall Keep the Faith Remembrance Day red poppy Poppy Day November 11 Moina Michael John McCrae In Flanders Fields First World War Throughout the world, sincere people celebrated that day in many places . I brought this case because they explains the spirit very well. The Richmond Youth Honour Choir (RYHC) is singing for peace on 11 November. RYHC’s artistic director, Heidi Epp said “It is important to remember the tragedies and losses of war, the suffering of many including veterans, their families, civilians and, well, everyone” I think it is very hard. Why? Because it is too difficult to remind these memories. It maybe pierce your heart. Coming face to face is to be our power and our foundation. After some time, flowers surely begin to blossom.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. / At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.”

Universal flu vaccine Strategy is Evolving

Why do you get a flu shot every year?

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE Universal flu vaccine Strategy is Evolving WHO universal flu vaccine swine influenza Spanish Flu seasonal influenza virus H5N1 H1N1 flu vaccine strategy CDC avian influenza Doesn’t it bother you? On the other hand, aren’t you nervous? Sometimes I’m worried about ‘what if something go wrong because of the vaccine?’. In fact, researchers don’t want to bother you but they can’t help getting a flu shot. Because Influenza virus is evolving from moment to moment. So vaccine that you got last year had no effect. Even so, influenza virus is nothing to sneeze. According to CDC(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), only in America 200,000 people go into a hospital for seasonal influenza virus. And 36,000 are died. So WHO(World Health Organization) made 3~4 vaccines that are predicted to be prevalent in advance on spring. So we need a universal flu vaccine.

Universal flu vaccine Strategy

For your understanding, watch this video. It is a good video to easily understand. As you already know, I’m a medical student. That antibody will protect you. But as previously stated, Virus mutation occurred frequently. Where is mutation? Surface proteins of Virus(Hemagglutinin, Neuraminidase) are changed. So we often know H1N1(Spanish Flu, swine influenza), H5N1(avian influenza). Often head of Hemagglutinin is a target of antibody.

Hemagglutinin is composed of two, head and stem. Head mutates a lot, but stem does low. So if you make an antibody that attacks stem of influenza virus, you don’t need to get a vaccine every year. This fact was known in the early 2000s, but there is a problem. But in 2015, two studies which overcome the limitations in innovative ways were published.(professional information Later posting)

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE Effective person work less and get RichㅣTim Ferriss Tools of Titans Tim Ferriss The 4 hour work week Role models growth Franz Kafka exceed our limits Everything is up to you Effective person     How many hours do you work for a day? For a week? Does the job become better? When I considered the result of my work, I became so stuffy. If it gets a great result, I’m very excited. But if it is poor, I am feeling of obstructed on the wall. The important thing is that bad times is much more. I work more than 15 hours a day(When the concept of work is expanded). There are many times when I’m burn out, but each time I resolve “Let’s do well!!!”. And then I found this book, ‘The 4 hour work week‘. Four hours a day is a dream. Isn’t it go too far? I can’t believe it. But the author is Tim Ferriss!

“Focus on being productive instead of being busy” – Tim Ferriss

Want to be Effective person

He is the author of ‘Tools of Titans‘ which is commonly famous. As I know, Tools of Titans suggest concrete and actionable solutions. So I read it! Look at the YouTube above. I have a belief that ‘Maybe I can be a effective person’. In fact, there are lots of ways which we already have heard. Do you find something ground-breaking? Like Franz Kafka “A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us.”. That’s right? I think way is not important. The important thing is that whether you can have faith or not. The faith is “You are really to be effective person”. It is all. It’s my review. Everything is up to you.

Role models who push us to exceed our limits, physical training that removes our spare tires, and risks that expand our sphere of comfortable action are all examples of eustress—stress that is healthful and the stimulus for growth.” – Tim Ferriss

“How to change the world” William McRaven

The way to change the world

When I wake up every morning, I open my eyes with annoyanceQuickly take a shower and run to school. When I sit at my desk, I just look at the blackboard vacantly. What can I do? These question often come to me as ‘lethargy‘. I just do the things which are given to me. Write down and think of it for a little. I really seems to be passive. What can I do for the world? But it is not just my problem. So thinking about this is meaningful for us. Do you want to change the world?

If you want to change the world

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE "How to change the world" William McRaven William McRaven The way to change the world Start off by Making your bed lethargy Jane Goodall habitual thinking “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” You can think ‘What on earth does it mean?’ We can think ‘It is of no use doing that’ like it’s been every day. This is our level of consciousness. Our habit of thinking is so scary. My thinking blocks me. And it makes no pretense. You don’t know who the criminal is. You can blame for innocent others, society. But I want you to know “It is not your fault“. It’s just a difference of habitual thinking. “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride.” I think it can make you start something. You can have a confidence.

And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made — that you made — and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.– William McRaven

Start off by Making your bed

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE "How to change the world" William McRaven William McRaven The way to change the world Start off by Making your bed lethargy Jane Goodall habitual thinking     “If you can’t do the little things right, you will never do the big things right.” It remind me of Jane Goodall‘s quotes. It has a same impact to me. “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” Everything is up to you. Everyday there is something you can do. You are not alone. 🙂

You are also taught that if a shark begins to circle your position—stand your ground. Do not swim away. Do not act afraid. then summons up all your strength and punch him in the snout. If you want to change the world, don’t back down from the sharks.” – William McRaven

Death Life lessons teach you to be deeper

Life lessons : Elizabeth Kubler Ross

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE Death Life lessons teach you to be deeper stage 4 Lung cancer Life lessons Elisabeth Kubler-Ross depression denial Death Life lessons bargaining Anger acceptance.     ‘Five stage of Grief‘ is very famous for every person. Because we don’t avoid death, ‘Life lessons‘ was a big hit in the world. I read this book very impressively. 5 stage is denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. I want to tell my story about Death Life lessons. I went to hospital to meet a lung cancer patient. She is a grandmother of her 3 sons. It has a big meaning to her. Her cancer is a stage 4 Adenocarcinoma. It means that she only has six months left. It is a very short time. Why do I meet her? I am a medical student. So I walk the hospitals for a brief time. I met her for a short moment, but she stayed in my mind for a long time.

Learning lessons is a little like reaching maturity. You’re not suddenly more happy, wealthy, or powerful, but you understand the world around you better, and you’re at peace with yourself. Learning life’s lessons is not about making your life perfect, but about seeing life as it was meant to be.” – Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Death Life lessons : Teach us

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE Death Life lessons teach you to be deeper stage 4 Lung cancer Life lessons Elisabeth Kubler-Ross depression denial Death Life lessons bargaining Anger acceptance.     She is maybe a stage of acceptance. It depends on each time, she looks relaxed. She said “My husband died in February this year. Now I’m going to die, too. If I live longer, It is more better to be able to see grand-children. But I don’t regret. My sons live very well.” I can’t say any words. I feel like meeting dead ends. I don’t know what to say and what to make an expression like. Her depth of words is the depth of her life. It is very difficult. I feel the need to be deeper than ever. I thought I should see and feel essential, fundamental things. The current medical education is not to deepen us. I seems to learn techniques. I want to change these things.

There is no need to go to India or anywhere else to find peace. You will find that deep place of silence right in your room, your garden or even your bathtub.” – Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Inspirational video : Minerva school beyond the world

Inspirational video : Throbbing with joy

Have you ever heard ‘Minerva school’? It is a very Inspirational video. The Minerva Schools at KGI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit university program that was founded in partnership between the Minerva Project and Keck Graduate Institute (KGI), a member of the Claremont University Consortium. Minerva’s founder, former Snapfish president Ben Nelson, has referred to it as “the first elite American university to be launched in a century.” It is amazing. They said “Minerva is deeply principled and dedicated to enhancing your potential and enabling your success.” Surprisingly, They don’t have a campus. What the hell? The city is their campus. Wow it’s really shocking. They only have 7 dormitories in 7 nations.

“Minerva is nurturing critical wisdom for the sake of the world.”

Beyond the world : Minerva school

7 nations are London, Berlin, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Hyderabad, Seoul, Taipei. What do they do there? They challenged the city. They have a location-based learning with leading figures and organizations in the nation. Their mission is to make “the next generations of exceptional, lifelong learners to work together in solving the most complex challenges of our time.” I’m surprised to the reason why Ben Nelson choose ‘Seoul’. He said Korea is very interested in education. So many higher education institutions in Korea can catch up quickly. I’m impressed to their sincerity. For next time more detailed story.

Books are so comfy. This is a personal story and now I tell about ‘Nobel economics’. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2017 was awarded to Richard H. Thaler for his contributions to behavioural economics. Professor Peter Gärdenfors, Member of the Economic Sciences Prize Committee, “He’s made economics more human“. I want to go into 2017 Nobel economics prize more deeply. 🙂

“Richard H. Thaler has incorporated psychologically realistic assumptions into analyses of economic decision-making. By exploring the consequences of limited rationality, social preferences, and lack of self-control, he has shown how these human traits systematically affect individual decisions as well as market outcomes.” – The Nobel committee

So I’m happy about that.” Also he is a coauthor, with Cass Sunstein, of Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness (Yale University Press, 2008). Surprisingly, Thaler made a cameo appearance in the 2015 movie The Big Short. He joked “Why doesn’t the Nobel committee talk my appearance in movie?” Though he is 72, he is very active and full of vitality to benefit the world.

Different from Mainstream economics

Many economic models assume people are “rational, unemotional, and self-controlled.” In his research, Every day we behave in ways that violate economic principles. It is a new field that bridges the gap between economics and psychology. Simply, we can tell 3 things. Keywords are mental accounting, behavioural finance, fairness, dictator game, planner-doer model and nudging‘. (More info)

  • Limited rationality
  • Social preferences
  • Lack of self-control
How can ‘behavioural economics’ survive

He admitted he can’t persuaded all of his colleagues and fellow economists of the importance of behavioral economics. So instead he said “I’ve used the strategy of corrupting the youth, whose minds aren’t already made up.” It is very funny. HAHAHA “Many great, young economists have embraced behavioral economics…The growth of the field is really due to the work of the people that followed me.”
