“Legislate Peace” Project: 2019 World Peace Summit

Do you think this world is peaceful? Or are you too busy making a living in front of us to think about? Everyone lives in their own world. The size of the world is only different. Of course, I know that unless it’s God, I can’t count everything. It could be hypocrisy. Nevertheless, there are those who risk their lives and do the work of peace. Who are they?

First of all, I’m going to see if it’s peaceful.

Ongoing Conflicts (2018-2019)

Ongoing armed conflicts have caused at least 181,000 fatalities(2018-2019). It included only battle-related death or intentionally targeted civilian casualties. Overall damage would be magnitudes greater if injuries and lasting aftermath from conflicts are considered.

Lists of ongoing armed conflicts

10,000 or more deaths in current or past year
  • Afghanistan conflict (1978/2001~) : 64,747 (total 1,240,000–2,000,000)
  • Mexican Drug War (2006~) : 22,500 (total 115,000)
  • Syrian Civil War (2011~) : 29,680 (total -570,000)
  • Yemeni Crisis (2011~) : 34,654 (total 60,223–83,700)
1,000–9,999 deaths in current or past year
  • Somali Civil War (1991~) : 5,064 (total 500,000)
  • Communal conflicts in Nigeria (1998~) : 3,162 (total 17,156)
  • Iraqi conflict (2003~) : 5,750 (total 288,000)
  • Boko Haram insurgency (2009~) : 2,457 (total 51,567)
  • South Sudanese Civil War (2011~) : 1,685 (total 383,000-400,000)
  • Libyan Civil War (2014~) : 1,727 (total 29,859–42,253)

In two years, so many people died. Fatalities are over 181,000. This number is not a small. Can you handle the grief of their family or friends? We can’t feel anything, because we’re far from psychological. The closer you get to them, the more you will live a life of helplessness, sad and unable to do anything. If you’ve had a similar experience, you know it.

But we can’t just sit still and do nothing. Now, we’re trying to find out who’s risking their lives for peace. They are HWPL.

HWPL is an NGO associated with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the UN Department of Global Communications and in Special Consultative Status with the UN ECOSOC. The organizers are the IPYG, an affiliated organization of HWPL, and the IWPG, a UN ECOSOC-affiliated NGO with Special Consultative Status.

HWPL is considered by experts and foreign media to be the most accomplished peace organization in a short period of time. Among them, the key role is DPCW, the answer to peace.

What is the problem of existing international law? It is not legally binding and it partially allows war. S0, the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) was drafted by prominent international law experts from 15 different countries.

The 10 articles and 38 clauses of the DPCW is a comprehensive documentation of the principles of peace that are required in this current era through an inclusive approach to ban, prevent, and resolve conflicts. Based on the DPCW, the common global yearning to achieve world peace and cessation of war can be accomplished with the core principles of peace.

It can be established in the form of international law, not just for individual societies, but in relationships between countries and in the entire globe as a universal standard and value. To achieve this goal, the DPCW needs to become a resolution at the United Nations – which represents the international community – and become an internationally binding legal document for every country and citizen to abide by it.

“I am deeply grateful to be able to implement the cause of peace in a specific way. This is truly a worthy cause. I was deeply impressed to see the DPCW with its refined and profound wisdom. I think it is worth the support from all leaders of the world. This is because the DPCW is a perfectly balanced document that was drafted through the great effort of international legal experts and is of fundamental value.”

What is the core of HWPL?

HWPL is said to have brought together the voices of citizens from all over the world. What is the driving force that makes things possible that no one else has done? It is the Mr. Man Hee Lee, who is supported by 1.8 billion young people around the world. He is also a veteran of the Korean War and is working harder for peace than a young man, despite his age.

His life-threatening moves touched many young people. What is surprising is that many people have seen the light from him. He is also called the president of the world. If you listen to his speech, you will find out why. The whole family in the world follows him, because he has a clear answer and leadership.

Q. What do you think of Chairman Lee?

A. “I believe Chairman Lee is a leader in the true sense of the word, which is easy to see in the way he wins the hearts and the minds of the younger generation, in particular because of his destiny: a man who fought in the Korean War which, like all wars, pits man against man; but what is even more striking is that, in the case of the Korean war, it was pitting brother against brother.

When youth and women’s associations were established, I think Man Hee Lee astutely picked up on the fact that herein lay the key, as youths are sent to die in wars by populist and ultranationalist leaders with dictatorial tendencies while women during war are not only victims but also suffer for their parents, children and brothers. We must never forget that while 20.000.000 soldiers died in World War II, 40.000.000 civilians, mostly women, children and the elderly, perished in that conflict as well.”

How about 2018?

70th UDHR/Add Your Voice

What year? What do you think the most important things were in this year? Maybe, I think 2018 is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN on 10 December 1948. Also, there had been various incidents over the world, but there had been progress in inter-Korean relations, the only divided nation.

When can we enjoy peace in full? Like Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said “Recent memory is replete with multiple examples of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.” There is still much to be desired. The human rights of millions are still being violated on a daily basis.

What should we do? How nice it would be to get rid of the war?

When the leaders of the two Koreas were having their third summit, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) chairman Man Hee Lee brought together more than 1,500 world-class political and religious leaders as well as peace activists in Incheon, South Korea, to reunite the two countries. Influential people from all over the world gathered to discuss how to achieve peace at the 2018 HWPL World Peace WARP Summit.

The Chairman Man Hee Lee said “It’s embarrassing to see the country is still divided. I believe the president of South Korea [Moon] and the leader of North Korea [Kim] know about this conference and I urge them to support us to achieve peace.” Is he a high-ranking civil servant? Nope. But it makes sense for him to say so. Because he is a veteran of the Korean War. It is unprecedented for a civilian to do such a thing.

In their acceptance speech, The Chairman Lee asked “HWPL’s proposal to end the war effectively through international law prohibiting the production of weapons and war is now recognized by the international community as an effective alternative to ending the war,” And he continued, “Now, please cooperate with HWPL to achieve a peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula.”

In particular, through a joint discussion with legal professionals around the world, a campaign is underway to establish an international law for peace, in which one million people from 170 countries participated, based on the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW).

Yemeni Civil War (2015 – present)

In 2014, Houthi rebels took control of the capital Sana’a and a large portion of northern Yemen. President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi and his cabinet fled to neighboring Saudi Arabia, where a Saudi-led coalition was formed to counter the Houthi rebellion. The Yemeni Civil War started. It is a humanitarian catastrophe. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) estimates that 14.1 million civilians are dangerously close to starvation.

  Total killed                    :         50,000+
  Civilians killed             :            6,592
  Wounded                     :         49,960
  Displaced                        :    3,154,572
Child died of hunger  :          50,000+

A child dies in Yemen every 10 minutes from preventable causes, including severe acute malnutrition and vaccine-preventable disease. There are many complex problems. With the economy in free-fall, parents cannot afford to feed their children. Also water, health care and sanitation all collapsed.

Yemen Peace Education of Children

Nevertheless, the children of Yemen wish that the fighting would stop. They have dreams of peace. They want to go to school and play in the park like children of other countries. I am deeply sorry for their story.

12-year-old Ala’a says “Peace means we don’t hear people talk about war. It means on TV I can watch cartoons instead of watching people die.” She teaches us many things. “I would like to tell them, ‘Do not kill our dreams.’ Stop the war so we can enjoy our childhood and achieve our dreams.” It is a real Peace Education. What can we do for them?

“Children have suffered terribly during more than three years of conflict — at least 6,000 have been killed or seriously injured by the fighting, while over 11 million need humanitarian assistance to survive.”
– UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta H. Fore

3 Peace Initiative : HWPL Peace Education

Despite the many differences that exist between individuals, we should all live in harmony in the global village; however, war and conflict currently threaten the lives and safety of all. In order to end war and inherit everlasting peace in the future, we must teach the values necessary for a new era of peace rather than the old ideology that has been stained by war.

HWPL Peace Education’s vision is to enlighten students and cultivate talented individuals with the values and spirit of peace, who can then play a pioneering role in spreading the culture of peace. This education provides a fundamental understanding of the basic principles that human beings must observe for peace to be created. Through the discovery and internalization of these peace values the inner selves of students and their ability to live together in harmony with others in their own community, and even the world, is properly nurtured.

In order to successfully cultivate children and young people as peacemakers, HWPL Peace Education first works to erase previously held ideas and values that are corrupt by directly showing how the world has become evil in the present era, and then plant the peaceful values needed for the new era of peace in their stead. It also introduces a new methodology in which the values of peace can be applied in all environments and real-life situations happening outside the classroom.

HWPL Chairman Lee highlighted that “education is crucial in realizing peace. I should not just teach for A’s, but teach someone who will be having moral obligations to respect life. In January, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in the Philippines established a cooperative relationship with HWPL to integrate Peace Education into the Curriculum of State Universities and Colleges.

CHED Commissioner Dr Ronald Adamat signed the Agreement, saying that it was a major achievement for HWPL. “Students would learn to uphold the principle of ‘Unity in Diversity’ and embrace the differences amongst people. They will be equipped with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values in conflict resolution and peace work and be further encouraged to work for the cessation of wars, hostilities, and disunity.”

HWPL Chairman Man Hee Lee stressed the mission of global families to implement peace education: “This world is not only for adults but also for young children. War and conflict should no longer occur for children who are born in the future. There is a saying, “If the water above is pure, the water below will be pure”. Everyone in the global village should become a messenger of peace. Then our children will see the peaceful environment and learn from it naturally. If we walk all the way to peace together, the children who are born will also walk along the path of peace together, and peace will automatically be passed down as a legacy to future generations. There is no use in passing down a world of conflict.”

He also added, “Everyone has biological parents, but those who create their hearts are educators. I sincerely plea for educators to take the lead in creating a world of peace,” enlightening the educators who conduct peace education.

HWPL Peace Education can achieve Dictionary without ‘War’!

HWPL Peace Education

“Before the discussion, students hit each other. They never used to love one another or care what other children are going through. But after the discussion on empathy, they could see the necessity of why we should have empathy. I actually felt the concept of empathy was sinking into these children.”

Having dedicated 17 years to teaching, Mr. Mathias Kevin Osimbo, the In-country Representative of Teachers Without Borders in Kenya, offers unique insights into peace education as one of the many educators who have implemented HWPL’s peace education in their classrooms.

The results were beyond surprising:

“I picked students from the group, peace club, in my school. When the members came, we picked one of the values, ‘empathy’. As the students discuss about this, they came up with their own ideas and definition of what empathy is. Some of them were too emotional and they were shedding tears as they were sharing their life experiences.

Let me tell you there was a change afterwards. Before the discussion, students hit each other. They never used to love one another or care what other children are going through. But after the discussion on empathy, they could see the necessity of why we should have empathy. I actually felt the concept of empathy was sinking into these children.”

The Chairman of HWPL, Man hee Lee, said
“If there is an answer to peace, then any family of the global village born in this era should become a messenger of peace…ending war and making sustainable peace a legacy for future generations.”

Teachers Without Borders messengers of peace Man Hee Lee internalization of peace values HWPL Peace education HWPL empathy DPCW Chairman of HWPL     Peace is so natural, and it’s the best value human beings should have. How can we achieve peace? Peace begins by teaching students peace. Teaching peace from a young age in all textbook, not war heroes and stories, is a source of great change as fundamental solution. If the word war is removed from the dictionary by peace education, culture of peace will prevail in the global community and war will no longer occur. Peace education is one of HWPL’s core initiatives and values education to pass peace on to posterity. HWPL Peace education focuses on developing peace education courses, teacher training, and opening peace classes to enlighten students and foster citizens of peace value and spirit. In order to end the war and leave eternal peace as a legacy for future generations, we need to teach the values needed for a new era of peace rather than the old war-stained ideology.

“Countless people have worked for peace on this planet but how much peace do we have today? There will be no greater thing we could leave as a legacy to our future generations than to end war on this planet and create peace.” – The Chairman of HWPL, Man hee Lee

HWPL Peace Academy

Academy MOU with 149 educational institutions in 10 countries

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE HWPL Peace Education can achieve Dictionary without ‘War’! Teachers Without Borders messengers of peace Man Hee Lee internalization of peace values HWPL Peace education HWPL empathy DPCW Chairman of HWPL This education provides a fundamental understanding of the basic principles that human beings must observe for peace to be created. Through the discovery and internalization of these peace values the inner selves of students and their ability to live together in harmony with others in their own community, and even the world, is properly nurtured. In order to successfully cultivate children and young people as messengers of peace, HWPL Peace Education first works to erase previously held ideas and values that are corrupt by directly showing how the world has become evil in the present era, and then plant the peaceful values needed for the new era of peace in their stead. It also introduces a new methodology in which the values of peace can be applied in all environments and real-life situations happening outside the classroom.

Currently, 149 educational institutions in 10 countries including the Israel, the Philippines, the U.S. and the Kosovo have been signed up to operate the HWPL Peace Academy in from elementary schools to universities.

The culture of peace is the best homework that we all have to do together and the greatest legacy that we can pass on to future generations. HWPL Peace education will create a peace culture. 🙂

HWPL Peace Education Workshop

Now, we need to work together for the world of peace in order to bring an end to war and armed conflicts and leave the full legacy of peace to our future generations.HWPL Chairman Man Hee Lee

In May 2018, a group of 11 professors and faculty members of national universities in Indonesia visited the Republic of Korea to learn about HWPL Peace education. Just three months prior to their visit, there are many amazing things. Many universities in Indonesia including Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta are signing a Peace Academy MOU with HWPL! The reason why they discuss at this workshop is to integrate HWPL’s Peace Education into their curricula for the coming fall semester.

Key theme

▲ Who is responsible to bring peace?
▲ What’s the key ingredient to make this world one of peace?
▲ All humanity needs to be born again with the culture of peace.

It is not understood by their common sense. How is this possible? One professor said “It is amazing to see a divided nation doing this work of peace. HWPL’s peace work takes great significance in the run for ending the war on the Korean Peninsula and for its reunification. By taking Mr. Lee’s purpose and his vision for peace and applying it to individuals, the environment, and governments, I am confident that it is possible to achieve peace solely by the hands of the people without any intervention from the government level or the religious leaders.”

The peace values presented by HWPL are necessary for realizing reunification led by the people.
