2019 Nobel Peace Prize Winner: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali

Do you know the
2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner?

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019 to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea. The prize is also meant to recognise all the stakeholders working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia and in the East and Northeast African regions.

After he heard the news of the award of Nobel Peace Prize, he said “I was so humbled and thrilled when I just heard the news. Peace is a very expensive commodity in my country.” (If you want to hear more)

When Abiy Ahmed became Prime Minister in April 2018, he made it clear that he wished to resume peace talks with Eritrea. In close cooperation with Isaias Afwerki, the President of Eritrea, Abiy Ahmed quickly worked out the principles of a peace agreement to end the long “no peace, no war” stalemate between the two countries.

Peace does not arise from the actions of one party alone. When Prime Minister Abiy reached out his hand, President Afwerki grasped it, and helped to formalise the peace process between the two countries. In Ethiopia, even if much work remains, Abiy Ahmed has initiated important reforms that give many citizens hope for a better life and a brighter future.

In line with this joyful news, there are so many efforts to achieve peace in Ethiopia.

On the 19th of October, the 2019 Ethiopia Peace Press Forum was held at the meeting hall of IPSS in Ethiopia, and Ethiopian journalists were in attendance. The theme of the forum was the “Realization of Peace Journalism and Public Journalism.”

They emphasized the role of a journalist in spreading the news of peace. Attendees also discussed freedom of expression based on Article 19 of the Declaration of Human Rights.

In addition, the journalists who attended the forum wrote and signed the Pledge of Peace Initiative, in which they promised to deliver peace news through the platform called Peace Initiative (PI) (http://peaceinitiative.net) and participate in peace projects. HWPL is running a Peace Initiative platform with journalists all over the world. This platform raises awareness of peace based on social atmosphere and the freedom of speech and press, and aims to ensure that the news of peace, which contributes to conflict resolution, can be delivered to people from all over the world.

Mr. Zelalem Girma, the Senior Editor to the Ethiopian Herald and who has participated in the Peace Initiative, emphasized the importance of a peace news channel saying, “Peace Initiative (PI) is a global journalist network in efforts of facilitating a culture of peace as contribution to conflict resolution and peace building through press freedom and freedom of information stipulated in the UN resolutions and international agreements. Individual journalists and media agencies affiliated with PI dedicate to spreading news of peace to enhance human rights and protect democracy.”

On 9th of July, 2018, Ethiopia and Eritrea declared an end to the conflict that has been raging for 20 years, thus promoting further peace and prosperity within Africa. Immediately after that, the work of peace was done quickly. The 2018 Addis Ababa Summit was held in Medium CR, African Union Commission and co-hosted by international organizations including the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices (IAC), the International Law Association (ILA) and HWPL. Politicians from Africa and the Middle East discussed the need for an international law for peace to bring out stability in the region and promote peace-related projects at all levels of society.

Mrs. Dagmawit Moges, Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa’s municipal government, gave a speech at the event and addressed the participants saying, “Addis Ababa city administration has a deep conviction that the launching of peace education in the universities could help promote harmony among students regardless of their nationalities, cultural background and religions.” She emphasized the necessity of the integration of peace education and also stated that the City Administration will pledge to extend every support necessary to institutions engaged in the implementation of this peace education project. An MOU agreeing to implement HWPL’s peace education curriculum was also signed by the university representatives in attendance laying the foundation for peace education in Ethiopia.

Adoption of the DPCW as a UN resolution

  1. Law for Peace
Implementation of the DPCW in the form of a UN resolution to fundamentally prevent armed conflicts and establish an order of permanent peace
  2. Alliance of Religions
Harmony among religions, which lead the world and deal with spiritual matters
  3. Peace Education
Peace education to build the character expected of global citizens

Everyone is important, but I think the most important point at this time is the Adoption of the DPCW as UN resolution. To achieve this goal, around 1,000 experts in various fields from around the world are discussing now the role of the HWPL Peace Advisory Council in turning the DPCW into legally binding form & national and regional support for the adoption of the DPCW as a UN resolution.

Specially, I want to thank the HWPL International Law Peace Committee and the HWPL Peace Advisory Council for their dedication. They took the leading roles in the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) which was proclaimed on the 14th of March 2016. The DPCW has been verified as the definite answer to peace.

Political leaders, including former and current heads of state, ministers, national assembly speakers and Supreme Court justices, together with HWPL are currently making practical efforts. I am really grateful to these people. They are trying wholeheartedly towards the enactment of an international law for peace through the introduction of the DPCW to the UN. At this year’s international law session, high-ranking officials and the HWPL international law advisory committee will create concrete measures to advance the process of the realization of the implementation of an international law for peace.

Don’t you know what the DPCW is?
The DPCW is a legal document that was drafted by HWPL and proclaimed on 14 March 2016, purposing to create a legally binding instrument for the cessation of war and establishment of peace. It is composed of 10 articles and 38 clauses, and offers universal values and principles such as peaceful conflict resolution, promotion of friendly relations between states, freedom of religion, and the spreading of a culture of peace, for the advancement of peace in both nations and civil society.

Hon. Deputy Paula Lorena Rodriguez Lima, During these 14 months she talked to persuade every single one of 120 congressmen and women

The Central American Parliament(Diputados del Parlamento Centroamericano, PARLACEN), with 6 member-states, has now completed the official process of approval for the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War(DPCW) after a year of discussion in the Commission of Peace, Public Security and Human Rights. It is an amazing achievement! Hon. Deputy Paula Lorena Rodriguez Lima, current Representative of Guatemala in PARLACEN, took the leading rold in this adoption. The most amazing thing is that she talked every single one of 120 congressmen and women to persuade the value of DPCW.

The resolution includes the following,

“It is intended that the Central American Parliament raise the flag of peace among the entire international community, taking this message to all governments, international organizations, civil society, political parties and others.

Based on what was considered above and the legal basis invoked, the Commission of Peace, Public Security and Human Rights issues favorable report with amendments to the initiative AP / 1278-278 / 2016 the “DECLARATION OF PEACE AND CESSATION OF WAR”.

In the DPCW promoted by HWPL on March 14, 2016, the respect of human rights and international law is fundamentally promoted, especially the role of the states in relation to the promotion of Peace, Justice and Freedom.”

And He also supported the DPCW on behalf of the pan-African Parliament (PAP). This means that every country in Africa will support the DPCW. Also, two countries (eSwatini and Seychelles) send documents that they would support the DPCW on a national level. I don’t know how much you recognize it, but it’s a huge result!!! And what I’d like to focus on the most is that the Chairman Man hee Lee declared, in 2013, ‘we created an international law and the presidents should sign here. And then, the war will be eliminated all over the world’. It really comes true.

The wind of peace is very strong worldwidely

As you can see from my postings so far, the whole world is cheering for messengers of peace. As if to prove it, more than 300 media outlets in 35 countries are promoting it just a short time after the African Leaders of Peace Summit 2018. At this time when the DPCW is gaining national support, the wind of peace is very strong all over the world. HWPL is considered by experts to be the most substantive and powerful peace organization ever. I feel also that HWPL could really be able to achieve peace. And this thinking is becoming increasingly convincing. I would like to introduce the core of the HWPL‘s peace movement.
