Cleaning Up After Kandy’s Grand Festival: A Step Toward Peace 🌍✨

In Kandy, Sri Lanka, HWPL joined hands with the Environmental Development and Welfare Foundation (EDWF), Kandy City Council, and the Kandy Youth Association to carry out a post-festival cleanup on August 10. The activity was part of the “New Village Campaign” and followed the famous Esala Perahera, the country’s largest Buddhist festival.

A total of 41 people, including local officials, citizens, religious leaders, and HWPL members, participated in collecting and sorting waste, which was later handed over to the city council for proper management.

This initiative was more than just restoring the beauty of the city streets. It became a reminder of civic responsibility and the culture of peace within the community. Volunteers expressed their desire to continue supporting HWPL’s peace projects, while the event also opened doors for new partnerships, including cooperation with EDWF’s founder.

Looking ahead, HWPL plans to sign an official memorandum of understanding (MOU) with EDWF and the city council in September to build a lasting partnership.

The cleanup highlighted how small actions can spark meaningful change. Beyond waste collection, it showed the power of collaboration between citizens, youth, and faith leaders in creating a more united and sustainable future. HWPL also announced plans to expand the New Village Campaign across Sri Lanka, combining peace education, legislative initiatives, and active civic engagement for long-term peacebuilding.

The Ministry of Higher Education of Timor-Leste and HWPL co-hosted the “Higher Education Vision Forum” on June 2 in Dili, the capital city. Representatives from 17 higher education institutions gathered to discuss how peace education can be introduced and expanded across the country. The forum aimed to plant the value of peace in young minds so they can grow as future “messengers of peace.”

During the event, participants heard about the importance of peace education, shared implementation ideas, and engaged in an open Q&A session. As a result, three institutions, including the National University of Timor-Leste, signed MOUs with HWPL to cooperate in introducing peace education into their programs. This marks a meaningful step toward creating a sustainable learning environment where peace becomes part of students’ everyday lives.

Schools as Spaces for Peace and Dialogue 🌍✨

In June, HWPL held a global online forum called “Schools as Spaces of Peace.” The meeting was supported by UNESCO partner bodies and education NGOs such as CLADE and the Higher Education Center for Sustainable Development. More than 300 participants joined, including teachers, researchers, and civil society leaders. The goal was simple: show how schools can stop violence and grow a culture of peace.

Speakers shared concrete programs and examples. The “Building Peace in Schools” initiative focuses on dialogue, partnership, and safe spaces for students. The “Tatou Kompry” method uses empathy and cooperation to stop bullying and restore dignity. Another project, “Odisea,” brings art, memory, and cultural diversity into the classroom, and already involves thousands of students across 26 countries. These efforts all highlight that schools can be places of healing, not division.

Every year on June 20, World Refugee Day, people around the world remember families forced to leave their homes. They flee because of war, violence, or disasters. In Georgia, the small city of Clarkston has welcomed refugees from more than 40 countries, including Myanmar, Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, and the Congo. Clarkston is known as a place of hope, but life here is still hard. Many refugees struggle with food, language, and finding stable jobs.

This June, HWPL Georgia branch took action to show care. On June 21, they worked with a student group called “Threads of Hope.” Together, they gave more than 2,000 pieces of clothing to 136 refugees. Volunteers also offered peace education for children, helping them feel safe and supported. The next day, another partner group prepared warm meals for 30 refugees. Smiles and gratitude filled the room.

HWPL Georgia says it will keep supporting refugees in the future. Their goal is not only to give practical help but also to raise awareness and build peace in the local community. Through small acts of kindness, hope can grow stronger. 🌟❤️

Busking for Peace and Unity at Pohang Beach 🎶🌍

On July 25, Pohang Yeongildae Beach turned into a stage of peace. The event was called “Dreaming of Peaceful Korean Unification.” It began with a clean-up under the theme “Connecting the Future.” Volunteers picked up trash along the sand. They wanted to protect nature and also share hope for a peaceful tomorrow. Citizens and visitors joined the effort, proving that caring for the earth connects to caring for peace.

The second part was a lively busking concert with the theme “Connecting the Nation.” Monks, a defector singer, peace educators, and citizens performed together. They sang songs for unification and invited the crowd to join. A fun quiz about North Korean words gave small gifts to winners. People also placed hibiscus flowers on a large map of Korea. The map slowly filled with blossoms, showing unity and hope. The night ended with music, laughter, and a shared dream of peace. 🌟❤️

Connecting North and South Through Forests 🌱🌍

On June 7, the “Connecting North and South Through Forests” Talk Concert was held at the Nakdong River Victory Memorial Hall in Daegu with about 400 citizens in attendance. Hosted by the Korea Forest Protection Association and the Companion Daegu-Gyeongbuk Committee, the event used “forests” as a symbolic theme to highlight cultural understanding and the possibility of inter-Korean connection. The atmosphere grew meaningful as veterans, youth, and ordinary citizens joined together to share their thoughts on peace and unification.

During the talks, speakers emphasized that unification is not just a political slogan but a matter of human lives. A defector shared the pain of separation and the hope of reunion with family, drawing deep sympathy from the audience. Other participants, including veterans and community leaders, also stressed the role of young people in building peace. The event featured a special moment where bouquets were presented to war veterans, expressing gratitude for their sacrifice.

The program ended with an interactive Q&A session where both panelists and attendees shared their ideas about unification. Finally, everyone stood together on stage and shouted, “Connecting North and South Through Forests! On June 12, the 1st Interfaith Peace Prayer for Patriots and Veterans was held in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province. HWPL Global Branch 10 and the Korean Buddhist Orders Association co-hosted the event, supported by Chungcheong Welfare TV and the Daejeon Ilbo. About 100 participants attended, including religious leaders and community members.

They gathered to honor the sacrifices of patriots and veterans who gave their lives for freedom and peace. The gathering also emphasized the need for interfaith unity in building peace on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.

The head of the Korean Buddhist Orders Association said the prayer meeting was a meaningful step to remember patriotism and practice unity. He praised HWPL’s efforts to work with all religions for peace.

The ceremony kept a solemn and respectful mood. It included memorial speeches, moments of silence, and musical tributes. Religious leaders stressed the value of protecting the nation and carrying on the spirit of sacrifice. The event ended with a symbolic flag-raising ceremony.

On April 30 in Addis Ababa, HWPL hosted Ethiopia’s first peacebuilding briefing 🌟. The event introduced the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) 📜 along with peace education 📚 and interfaith dialogue as key strategies. Participants also reviewed sample university curricula and discussed a pilot “Peace Ambassador” program for civil servants.

The briefing recalled the 2024 interreligious clash near Mekelle Square 💔, showing how fragile community relations can be. HWPL stressed that education, lawmaking, and dialogue are needed to heal divisions. A workshop was also held to adjust policies and civic approaches to Ethiopia’s multi-ethnic society, aligning with national peace goals.

On July 3, HWPL signed a historic MOU with the Peacebuilding Office (PBO) under Liberia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs to introduce peace education nationwide. This agreement is seen as a milestone for institutionalizing peace education across the country and a major step toward building lasting peace. Despite ongoing challenges such as limited youth engagement and the absence of structured peace education, the partnership aims to fill these gaps with a strategic framework for cooperation.

Under the agreement, HWPL and the PBO will launch pilot peace education programs in selected schools, gradually expanding them nationwide. They also plan to establish stronger collaboration between civil society and government agencies to create a more sustainable foundation for peace. During the signing ceremony, Liberia’s Deputy Minister endorsed HWPL’s Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW), affirming the government’s commitment to peace.

HWPL highlighted that the MOU reflects both parties’ shared vision of cultivating a culture of peace through education and multilateral cooperation. The Association of Social Activities Development Sri Lanka (ASAD) is a leading NGO officially registered in 1992 and 2001. With activities in 25 administrative divisions and over 14,000 village groups, ASAD promotes human rights, poverty reduction, and sustainable peace through its Human Rights and Peace Ambassador Organization (HROPA).

On June 21, 2025, the Legislate Peace (LP) Program was officially launched in Colombo, Sri Lanka 🌍. Hosted at the National Library 📚, the event was organized by HWPL with IPYG, the National Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), and state broadcaster ITN. A total of 116 participants, including government officials, students, and civic leaders, gathered to support youth-led peace initiatives.

The LP Program focuses on building ethical leadership and civic awareness among young people 🌱. Its first rollout in Gampaha introduced structured education on peace, anti-corruption, and active citizenship. The launch also featured the founding of the IPYG Volunteer Club 🌟, which will lead community efforts such as environmental cleanups, integrity campaigns, and peace awareness events.

Government bodies like CIABOC pledged to expand leadership and anti-corruption training 💡. Participants also shared project ideas for local development and peace promotion. These efforts align with Sri Lanka’s Clean Sri Lanka policy and the adoption of Saemaul Undong values 🌾. The Alliance Development Trust (ADT), an NGO founded in 2005 and officially registered with the Sri Lankan government, is a proud member of IPYG. ADT goes beyond humanitarian aid by focusing on disaster relief, health, livelihood support, child protection, and peacebuilding. It follows international standards such as the Sphere Standards and WANGO Code of Ethics, while promoting interfaith dialogue and youth-led peace initiatives.

Recently, ADT launched the RISE Project in Gampaha with the Youth Empowerment for Peacebuilding Working Group (YEPW), bringing together over 150 young people from diverse religious backgrounds.
