In Wikipedia, a peace walk or peace march, sometimes referred to as a peace pilgrimage, is a form of nonviolent action where a person or groups of people march a set distance to raise awareness of particular issues important to the walkers. Why does it have this meaning? Looking at human history, the Peace Walk has become in this way. Just as chewing rice several times makes it taste better, let’s take a closer look.

First, I want to look at the European Peace Walk(EPW).

European Peace Walk, 100 y after WW1

One walker uploaded her experience in 2015. It will be more helpful for you to watch other videos in person.

In 2014, Groups of walkers left Vienna on a six-country, 23 day walk of peace to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I. This year marks the fifth anniversary of EPW. The total length is about 330 kilometers. After exploring Vienna, peace walk starts in Budapest. And they walk to Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and ends in Trieste, Italy.

Why do they walk?

100 years ago, they all were in violent conflict. The 4-year war killed so many European. The number of casualties is nine million soldiers and five million civilians. So, Lynch, one of organizer said “The walk’s concept of crossing borders is paramount. We are crossing so many borders, and really sending a message of, ‘We are all on one single journey as humanity’.” She lastly asked “What do we really need to move toward a global family, and make that a possibility?” I think there is a point in her final answer.

“The more we can have conversations about what peace looks like,
the better.” – European Peace Walk (EPW)

But it is not Camino.

According to a YouTube search of “camino de santiago”, it’s a short, beautiful video.

It’s not without walkers’ complaints, as there are long, remote places to walk in a day. One walker said “On the website, the EPW is described as a Camino-style adventure, but it is not.” I think this is what most people think. People compare EPW to the Camino de Santiago, which started in 814. There are many people who went to Camino and got healing. The reason why was that the Camino has an infrastructure that supports the needs of pilgrims. But there is no such structure on the EPW.

In a way, this is a natural result. Walkers’ expectations are high from the start, so I think it’s likely to develop in the future. Finally, some travelers say they don’t know why they do this. I also want to ask you, “Why do you walk? What would be your mission as a Peace Walker?”

I know a meaningful peace walk with practical purpose.

It is the HWPL Peace Walk

In May this year, about 70 countries host various events and peace walk. Maybe, I think that it is estimated that there will be more than one million. Every year, the scale is growing, and we are ready to achieve our goals. This year’s event will be focused on the “Peace Letter Campaign” led by the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), an affiliated youth organization of HWPL. The campaign is aimed to urge for the support of the heads of each country to develop the DPCW into a legally binding document by submitting it as a resolution to the UN.

Hundreds of thousands of young people have sent letters to the presidents of 193 countries, and are now waiting for a reply. The purpose of 6th 525 HWPL Peace Walk is to urge them to reply. Why do so many people enthusiastically support HWPL? This is because HWPL has a definite answer to peace. HWPL is in Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and associated with the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC). Aren’t you curious about the answer?

It is the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW), which was drafted by 21 international law experts. It has overcome the lack of international law so far, and is highly praised by law experts. I’ll give you an example on the ground, but there’s a lot more.

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE [D-3] Peace Walk in Europe and HWPL Viktor Yushchhenko UN General Assembly RE_Peaceletter Reply Peacewalk Peace Letter Manheelee IWPG IPYG hwpl peace walk HWPL European Peace Walk EPW DPCW Camino de Santiago #525_peacewalk

H.E. Viktor Yushchhenko, Former President of Ukraine said “I am deeply grateful to be able to implement the cause of peace in a specific way. This is truly a worthy cause. I was deeply impressed to see the DPCW with its refined and profound wisdom. I think it is worth the support from all leaders of the world. This is because the DPCW is a perfectly balanced document that was drafted through the great effort of international legal experts and is of fundamental value.

In the final conclusion, what was important in European Peace Walk is that we must think about peace if we are to move on. And I think HWPL Peace Walk meets this condition. In fact, any peace movement, if we can make our people better, is a great welcome. Please look forward to new and better news. Let me finish by introducing one last time. 🙂

HWPL Special Edition: The Beginning of Change towards Peace
A STEP TOWARDS PEACE The Chairman Man Hee Lee Quotes #11 What is HWPL UN General Assembly PeaceLetter Manheelee Man Hee Lee Quotes HWPL Peace Letter DPCW
Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL has traveled around the world 30 times and visited more than 100 countries in the last seven years for cessation of war and world peace. [Photo: HWPL]

Senior reporters with a high position at the newspaper office came and asked questions about his ” Peace Scenario.”

Q. What is the significance of the peace work that you have done so far for cessation of war and world peace?

The Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL said “More people died from starvation than from combat injuries during the Korean War. Many people struggled to live, eating anything from dirt to gunpowder in bullets. When could they ever take off their blood-stained military uniforms?”

“To do so, war had to come to an end. Wars must never happen again. Peace is not just a matter of one individual or one country. It matters to all people of the world, so everyone in the world must support this work of peace. I invite everyone to become messengers of peace, transcending the borders of nationality, ethnicity and religion.”

Q. Could you comment on the Peace Letter Campaign that HWPL is engaging in together with many youth, women and social organizations around the world?

The Chairman Lee said “If heads of state truly love their citizens and their countries, they will not be able to ignore the will of the people. Young people are sacrificed in the frontlines of war without getting a chance to blossom. Has anyone compensated for their sacrifices? Now the youths are saying they will protect themselves. Women are saying they will not send their children to battlefields. Their Peace Letters will certainly move the world.”

Q. What could be a path forward for peace education?

He answered “Someone once offered to award me a peace prize, but I rejected the offer. Instead of receiving the peace prize, I made a book that contains all the peace work that we have done so far and distributed the book in libraries around the world, so that the future generations can know about this work of peace. I believe that this is a true peace education that we need.”

“No one has yet been able to achieve cessation of war and realize world peace, and this work may seem impossible even in the future. However, this is a work that needs to be done by someone for all mankind, and maybe the DPCW, which is about to be introduced in the UN General Assembly, could be the last hope we have.”

I was most impressed with his last words. I don’t want to miss this chance, which may be the last hope. It’s not just for me, it is for all of us. Since IPYG Peace Letter Campaign has already become an international campaign involving 200,000 people, I’d like to keep trying to write peace letters.
Let’s write together. 🙂

Peace Letter from a Samoan Australian youth

This is part of the IPYG Peace Letter Campaign.

About 200,000 handwritten peace letters have already been sent to incumbent presidents from 193 countries with U.N. membership. Already, young people from all over the world are rising to call for supporting the DPCW.

No one can stop the huge flow.

Peace Letter from Fa’alia

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE Peace Letter from a Samoan Australian youth Youth What is HWPL Samoan Australian Peace Letter hwpl peacewalk HWPL Peace Letter 314peaceletterday

I can’t write down the full text of her letter here, but I’m only going to introduce some.

“When people ask the question ‘What is Samoa like?’, the first word that comes to my mind is “peaceful”. However, peace was not always part of the history of Samoa. Samoa has faced many wars and conflicts throughout its history. These wars and conflicts, like many others, resulted in the loss of life, excruciating pain, social instability and the loss of security.”

According to the 2016 Australian census, there are a total of 75,755 Australians with Samoan ancestry. Usually, Samoans we know are the strongest. But in the history of Samoa, there was so much pain and sadness.

Let me give you an example. In the Second Samoan Civil War (1898–1899), two leaders fought, so they became two countries, two peoples. What makes the situation worse is foreign intervention. DPCW is blocking this completely. Tanumafili I with United States and United Kingdom vs Mata’afa with Germany.

Let’s hear more about this young man who knows the pain of war better than anyone else.

“As an Australian-Samoan youth and as a member of all the youth of this world, I have a duty to stand up and protect the youth of our nation, the youth of Australia and the youth of the world. This is a duty that prevents me from standing by idly and not taking action. I have a duty to help bring hope and peace to our world.”

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE Peace Letter from a Samoan Australian youth Youth What is HWPL Samoan Australian Peace Letter hwpl peacewalk HWPL Peace Letter 314peaceletterday

This is not only his duty. Will you wish others to do it? This is our job, our role and our duty. We must do it. Young people of the world, let’s join them.

Honorable Prime Minister, we humbly ask that you take on this role as part of the forefront of the movement in the Oceanic and Pacific region by providing your support for World Peace and the solution to peace that the DPCW contains. We ask for your support for the DPCW to become a legally binding document in the United Nations in order that it may bring about the peace that our world desperately longs for.

Please become a leader that helps pave the way for peace for all future generations.

Sincerely Yours,
Fa’alia.

The Chairman Man Hee Lee Quotes #10

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE The Chairman Man Hee Lee Quotes #10 What is HWPL PressConference Peace Letter Manheelee Man Hee Lee Quotes Man Hee Lee biography DPCW 3rd DPCW
Press Conference for the 3rd Annual Commemoration of the DPCW

On the day of the press conference that was attended by 57 media outlets from Korea, HWPL’s Chairman Man Hee Lee stated, “Everyone, despite being busy, by gathering here together like this I can understand that you have come with the same heart that believes peace is better than war. I sincerely ask you (members of the press) to focus on reporting and working hard so that peace can be achieved (in both Korea and the rest of the world)”.

Finally, in regard to the meaning of the 3rd anniversary of the proclamation of the DPCW, HWPL’s Chairman Man Hee Lee, explained, “It is to put an end to war around the world, and if there is no war, then the world of peace can be realized. That is why we want to achieve a world of peace that is free from war, which can then become a shining legacy for future generations. If you stop doing this for even a short while, then it will just cool down. We must do it until the time when it is completely finished. If it is done in this way, then you will not be still but will continue working hard.

One more thing, the cessation of war or the realization of peace are not things that are the personal work of a single person. If we are called as the family of the world, then it goes without saying that this is relevant to each one of us. If we truly value this world and ourselves and love the citizens of our own countries, then not only leaders but everyone should acknowledge this. It doesn’t make sense to not give unconditional support. If there is something wrong, then the reason must be stated clearly, but just refusing to do (without giving a reason) is not right. Do not be like that. If all us together become one in heart and have the same will, then we must create a world without war”.

He then directly addressed all the reporters and members of the press present stating, “Try reading the 10 articles and 38 clauses of the DPCW. All of this work will be done quickly only if the reporters take the lead. Please remember this,” reiterating the importance of the role that the media plays in the achievement of peace.

International Women’s Peace Day 26 April

Women’s efforts for peace have always been impressive.

I’m going to take a look at the events of peace that are historically important. I can’t help but cry at the thought of what they’re trying to do, even now.

International Women’s Day 8 March

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year. The first start begins in 1908. A New York textile factory caught on fire on 8 March 1908, with the owner trapping his female workers inside.. He had been forcing them to work 10-hour days, making fabric of mauve and lilac color. 129 workers died in the fire. It was a terrible thing. #WomensDay

In 1975, during International Women’s Year (IWY), the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March. The Charter of the United Nations, signed in 1945, was the first international agreement to affirm the principle of gender equality. Also, in 1946, the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is established for empowerment of women.(In 2019, CSW63) Taking a historic step in July 2010, the UN General Assembly creates the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).

Peace activist Malala Yousafzai has had a tremendous impact on women and young people, and has strengthened the power of women. Their efforts are not over. In 2015, countries adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Goal 5 is “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. They announce their achievements every year, and strive to achieve our goals.

International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) is trying her best for peace.

It is still at a serious level.

  • It is estimated that 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner (not including sexual harassment) at some point in their lives.
  • However, some national studies show that up to 70 percent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime.
  • It is estimated that there are 650 million women and girls in the world today who were married before age 18.
  • Approximately 15 million adolescent girls (aged 15 to 19) worldwide have experienced forced sex.
  • It is estimated that of the 87,000 women who were intentionally killed in 2017 globally, more than half (50,000- 58 per cent) were killed by intimate partners or family members, meaning that 137 women across the world are killed by a member of their own family every day.

Now what should we do?

International Women’s Peace Day 26 April

I think you know that women have done so much for peace. So what’s next? Now what are the roles we should do for peace? I can’t wait without doing anything. IMO, the paradigm of peace has already changed. Now the citizens are the mainstay, changing everything. This shift started from “Peace Letter Campaign” from IPYG and HWPL, which became associated with the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) and ECOSOC in 2016.

Last year, IPYG and IWPG sent around 200,000 letters to the heads of state from 193 UN member states. Without the answer to peace, peace cannot be achieved. The Answer is the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW), drafted by the 21 prominent international law experts. What is the current problem of international law? It is not “legally binding.

So, there are IPYG, representing 1.8 billion young people , and IWPG, representing 3.7 billion women, for HWPL. Emil Constantinescu, former president of Romania, said “Youth and women can become the most persuasive emissaries of peace in the present and in the future.”

Now, there are a few things left for us. The Presidents began to move, and the turn went over. If we shout in one voice, no one can stop it. Voice of one is not enough to achieve peace, but voice as one is enough to do so. Which is your choice? Endless war or Peaceful future?

War and Religion are inseparable

  • Wars of mankind : total 14,513 times
  • Reason of War: 80% Religious war
  • Victims of War : 3.7 billion
  • Nobel Peace prize rewarded : 130 times

Why Religion? This is because 80 percent of the war was caused by religion. Isn’t religion there to live well? Isn’t that what religious leaders teach you? But look at the reality before your eyes. How much does religion have to do with peace?

There are a lot of people trying, but things are still difficult. Who goes to fight when war happens? Someone’s son, someone’s father. Who in the world can compensate for their death? Is money all right? They don’t come back alive. How much pain is left of the family? Can you handle it? This is a really difficult problem.

HWPL WARP Offices in the World

Seeing the current status of the religious war, HWPL thinks the solution of peace. ‘How can we make it?’ The answer they found is the Scriptures. Because it represent the accumulation of not only the spiritual and moral teachings of the respective faiths, but also a fundamental standard of human conduct.

Although the common objective that all religion is the great things, these messages are often overlooked by people. So peace is becoming an elusive concept. So HWPL approach towards the root cause of this hostility between faiths, defined as the misunderstandings that arise from the misinterpretation of these scriptures. Eminent religious experts recognized it as an ‘Innovative Approach’. The alliance of religions is the earnest hope of all humanity.

On February 21st, 1,000 social representatives including youth and women from ASEAN member states, religious leaders, and NGOs participated in the ‘2019 Southeast Asia Peace Forum’ held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia to discuss practical approaches to peace building in the region.

The participants, both national leaders and students and citizens, wrote supporting letters for the DPCW, which will then be presented to their respective national leaders and international organizations to advocate for the implementation of the declaration at the UN.

Mr. Parlindungan Purba, S.H., MM., Chairman of the Second Session of Regional Representative Council in Indonesia, urged for the UN adoption of the DPCW, saying “We will establish clear and practical plans to increase the number of countries which are supporting the DPCW. There is also a moral obligation to fulfill our mission to urge for peace and the DPCW. We must be peace creators.”

Mr. Man Hee Lee, the chairman of HWPL, said “Now we have the answer within the 10 articles and 38 clauses of the DPCW to achieve peace and end war. There is no one who doesn’t want peace. The leaders of the nations should do what their people want them to do. This is the true politics that lead us from death to life. There shouldn’t be anyone who disturbs this work of peace. We all have to put our efforts together. When we work together for peace, it will be the light that shines all over the world”.

As religious leaders who propagate peace, which is the essence of religion, they felt a great sense of mission and promised to do their part for peace, and vowed to recognize the value of the discussion session of the HWPL WARP Office and to continue to attend.

Since the WARP Summit in 2014, HWPL operated the WARP Office for interreligious harmony in 170 countries around the world, with 3,000 religious leaders, including Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. In addition, they are trying to pursue harmony within the church through the “Square of religious dialogue“.

On February 19th, the ‘2019 Pacific Leaders’ Summit for Peace, Sydney’ was held at the New South Wales Parliament House in Australia with HWPL, an international NGO under the UN ECOSOC. It was held for the South Pacific leaders to call for the introduction of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) at the UN General Assembly in 2019. During this conference, 12 high-level government leaders from eight countries in the South Pacific showed their support for DPCW.

Mr. Man Hee Lee, the chairman of HWPL, urged for joint efforts towards the enactment of the DPCW by saying, “Now we have the answer within the 10 articles and 38 clauses of the DPCW to achieve peace and end war.
