[Miracle Morning for 10 days] I Never Give Up!

Do you know this book? Miracle Morning! The author of this book is Hal Elrod. Briefly, I tell about him. At age 20 he was hit by a drunk driver at 70 mph. Despite being dead for 6 minutes, he never give up. Also he is in a coma for 6 days with breaking 11 bones and being told he may never walk again. He never give up! But a year later, a surprising thing happened! Hal Elrod has appeared on dozens of TV and radio shows and numerous books. What’s happening?

He targets miracle morning!

He is to be a Hall of Fame business achiever, ultra-marathon runner! Only just in one year. It’s unbelievable, aren’t you? His story is touching many people. He motivated them who hunger for change. Hal come up with an answer. Some people doubt and some people practise. A lot of people started to post their acts in Youtube. Community is formed soon and they said, “Every day is like Christmas!”

How exciting it is! Everyday is Christmas!

So I started 10 days ago

Hmm… I succeed only 2 days. HAHAHA. But I never give up! Though I sticked to one promise. Every day I am running 1 km. It is still kept under lock and key. So far, I am too hard. But praise me in that I started to try! Just look forward to me.

Your job interview : It’s cool

Are you trying to get jobs? How about your job interview? It‘s cool, right? If everything is going well, there is no reason to worry about. Do you want to make a strong impression on job interview? Let’s think in a interviewer’s position. Here we go! You joined the company already. Your five-year-anniversary date is coming. It would be like a dream come true, aren’t you? You get a chance to be an interviewer. So now, What kind of people do you hire? You want someone whom your company need. If a interviewee want to be hired, he should know much about the company.

I‘d like to formalize your employment with us. Wow!

Who knows well about the company? Someone who has joined for 5 years? A man suffering from all departments? Nope. Of course, it can not be ignored. But you can’t know better than the founder and you can’t know better than Operations. Try to listen saying of these people carefully. And make your competence felt. Interviewers said, “He’s someone whom our company absolutely needs.” Wow. The best scenario. But that’s easier said than done. How can we meet them who are the busiest in that company?

In fact, you can meet them. It’s easy and simple.

How can we meet busy men and women?

You can meet them in the company’s homepage. They are in ‘Mission, Vision and Core Values’. Why? Because it is the way they operate. You don’t know yet? Let us take a concrete example.

Apple “Think Different”

Mission(1980 Steve jobs) : “To make a contribution to the world by making tools for the mind that advance humankind.”

Vision(Tim Cook) :

“We believe that we’re on the face of the Earth to make great products.
We believe in the simple, not the complex.

A company that has no identity is unattractive

Mission vs Vision vs Core values

Do you get an idea of how they operate their company? Mission is a reason for being of company.(raison d’etre) There are many other companies but why do this company exist? Is it threatening? HAHA. In previous post, I linked company’s mission and personal mission. Do you want more? Go to this link.

What is Vision? It is a concrete blueprint. When Disneyland was completed, Walt Disney was died already but it is same as his blueprint(his imagination). In other words, vision is a specific goal. Lastly, what is Core values? It is criteria for decision-making. There are lots of moments to decide from big things like company’s future, to trivial things like telephone contact with customers. Every employee follow company’s Core values. Explanation is over. Now, company’s success depends on how much company impressed their employees Mission, Vision and Core values. Why? A company that has no identity is unattractive.

Likewise, if interviewee don’t know these things, he must look like a fool. In fact, just because you know(hear) it, doesn’t mean you understand it. Because you should know more than meets the eye. If you feel it deep down in the heart, you are guaranteed to succeed.

The sanitary workers are working at the street. How do they feel? I think it may be terrible. This may be told ‘Aren’t you a little old for this work?’, ‘What do you achieve in life?’. It is awful cruel. Most of them have a blank expression, or a grimy face. But there is someone who are especially happy. How can…? I think it is impossible. So, I asked him. “Why are you so happy?” It’s about problem of Personal mission statement.

That sweeper said, “I was sweeping a corner of the earth.”

The above story is extracted from book of 최인철, Seoul National University professor. It is a story about mission. It is same as ‘Why do you live?’. Let’s think. One day, you were walking down the street. But you are suddenly asked ‘Why do you live?’. And you said ‘…what?’. You may be at a total loss for words. It was strange because we didn’t really think about it too much. So, I will give you a time to think seriously. It should be serious.

But it is still difficult.

It will be easier if you think the company’s mission. What’s a google’s mission? Google’s mission statement is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

What’s Disney? The Disney theme park mission statement is: “We create happiness by providing the best in entertainment for people of all ages everywhere.”

Apple company mission statement(1980): “Man is the creator of change in this world. As such, he should be above systems and structures, and not subordinate to them.”

What’s your mission in life?

I made my Personal mission statement. “Astonish the world, around me and me.” Through this chance, I wish you can find out the answer of ‘Why do you live?’.

Astonish the World : Forget you!

These days, I have a lot of worries. What should I do for peace? Do you know ‘Jeseok Yi(Jeski)‘? He has won ‘The One Show advertising awards‘ in 2007 for an environmental poster. It depicted a smokestack as a gun firing towards the sky. But in Korea many powerful companies didn’t hire him. Why? He was a just provincial university student. He was absolutely nothing in Korea. Me too. I’m nothing. I’m just a college student.

So, I’m going to try do something.

Road to Happier World: Poor make Happy

Jeseok Yi fed up with the reality of commercial advertisement. Clients have poured money into a commercial advertisement. Through this, many people live in luxury. So adman spend an hour to get ideas but 10 hours to decorate ppt. So he fed up! He started to keep away from “bubble”. So 70% of his client list are many non-profit organizations including Red Cross, Korea Disaster Relief, World Vision. Jeseok Yi strongly believes that adman like him can change the world for the better because ad campaigns can change thinking of people.

Jeski’s philosophy is to “make poor people happy than making happy people a bit happier”

What can I do for peace?

I think ad campaigns can change the world. To move the world, we need startling ideas. I think Heavenly Culture it is. What this means is to live according to the principles and values of heaven, a place that gives light, rain and air without boundaries. I want to advertise it all over the world! I’m sure you didn’t see it, even think it. The world will be surprised. Heavenly Culture is on the top of the world.

The legend of Indian girl Pocahontas

Surprisingly it is not just legend. It is a real story. Pocahontas (born Matoaka, known as Amonute, c. 1596–1617) was a Native American(Indian girl). There is a famous anecdote. Pocahontas placed her head upon the Englishman John Smith‘s head in 1607 when her father raised his war club to execute him. When she died, she was just 21 years old. Her story has been romanticized over the years. So Walt Disney Pictures produced Pocahontas (Disney) in 1955.

Do you know Jim whitaker? He was the first American to reach the summit of Mount Everest. There is an anecdote about him. Let’s see it.

When a sherpa, professional climber, died to try helping climbers, a reporter asked him.

“If normal climbers don’t want to get to the top, that sherpa don’t need to die, aren’t you?”

Jim said, “Sherpa may be not dead, but that’s the reason why we exist.”
A reporter said, “Why do sherpa climb the mountain?”

Jim said, “Probably you’ve never ever set foot on the summit. Someone, who reached the top, knows it. It is a great sense of accomplishment to make a person, who can’t reach the summit, possible.

Simon O. Sinek (born October 9, 1973) is a British/American author, motivational speaker and marketing consultant.^[1] He is the author of best seller ‘Start With Why’. Simon Sinek explores how leader can inspire cooperation, trust and change. He tell us why we are inspired by some people, leaders, messages. He started with a golden circle. First he asked ‘Why is Apple so innovative?’

Golden Circle : Why?

Every single person, every single organization on the planet knows what they do, 100 percent. Some know how they do it, whether you call it your differentiated value proposition or your proprietary process or your USP. But very, very few people or organizations know why they do what they do. And by “why” I don’t mean “to make a profit.” That’s a result.

By “why,” I mean: What’s your purpose? What’s your cause? What’s your belief? Why does your organization exist? Why do you get out of bed in the morning? And why should anyone care?

Let me give you an example.

That’s how most of us communicate. That’s how most marketing and sales are done, that’s how we communicate inter-personally. We say what we do, we say how we’re different or better and we expect some sort of a behavior, a purchase, a vote, something like that.

Here’s our new law firm: We have the best lawyers with the biggest clients, we always perform for our clients.

Here’s our new car: It gets great gas mileage, it has leather seats. Buy our car. But it’s uninspiring.

Here’s how Apple actually communicates.

“Everything we do, we believe in challenging the status quo. We believe in thinking differently. The way we challenge the status quo is by making our products beautifully designed, simple to use and user friendly. We just happen to make great computers. Want to buy one?”

Totally different, right?

You’re ready to buy a computer from me. I just reversed the order of the information. What it proves to us is that people don’t buy what you do; people buy why you do it. Now you can find ‘The secret of Life’
