100th Anniversary of the March 1st Movement in Gwangju, Korea

Every year on 1st of March, the Flag of South Korea (Hangul: 태극기) is placed everywhere in Korea. The March 1st Movement Day, also known as Sam Il Jeol (Hangul: 삼일절), can be seen as a symbol of the Korean Independence Movement. Korea was a colony of Japan from 1910 into 1945. The pain and sorrow of being a colony are beyond description.

At 2 p.m. on 1st of March, 1919, 33 ethnic representatives read out loud the Korean Declaration of Independence. The declaration, which begins with the following words, is truly touching. “We herewith proclaim the independence of Korea and the liberty of the Korean people.” What kind of feelings did people have at that time?

“The March 1st Independence Movement was the declaration and the act by which the Korean people spoke out about the value of independence, peace, democracy and human rights.”

President Moon Jae-in
For more information

Massive crowds assembled in Pagoda Park to hear the declaration that a student, Jae-yong Chung, read publicly. He shouted “No power in this world can obstruct or suppress it!” Approximately 2,000,000 Koreans had participated in the more than 1,500 demonstrations. Were there no suppressors? No. 7,509 people killed, 15,849 wounded, and 46,303 arrested by the Japanese police force and army. As punishment, some of the arrested demonstrators were executed in public.

100th Anniversary of the March 1st Movement in Gwangju, Korea

On Friday, all people of the Koreas commemorate the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Movement. President Moon Jae-in visited the graves of several key figures in the fight for Korean independence, and the government decided this week to honor freedom fighter Yu Gwan-sun with the country’s highest medal of honor, the Republic of Korea Medal.

Yu was only 16 when she attended the main March 1 gathering in Seoul, and she was arrested and died in prison at the age of 17. If you want to know more info here

The theme of the anniversary ceremony is “Let’s Open Another 100 Years Together,” a clear reference to South Korean Moon’s work to engage with the North. What does it mean? President Moon said “We are no longer in the periphery of history. I hope we will open a new era with pride and confidence that the strength to decide and open the next 100 years rests in us.”

How did the Trump-Kim summit go in Hanoi, Vietnam? On February 28, Trump and Kim left Hanoi abruptly without signing any sort of agreement. People are in shock. What happened? Many expected that one of the most likely things to come out of Hanoi would be an agreement to end the Korean War, which has been on pause for more than 60 years. It led many experts and lawmakers to heave sighs of relief, even as the summit’s abrupt finale raises questions about What’s Next?

But Moon Jae-in didn’t stop to hope. Because he love peace. He want to end the Korean War. Countless people do not want war, they want PEACE. If he truly love the people, he will strive for peace. He said “On April 27, both Chairman Kim Jong Un and I discussed joint projects to mark the 100th anniversary of the March First Independence Movement and to mark the founding of the provisional government, and our initiative was contained in the Panmunjeom Declaration.”

“If the South and North can share together the history of Korean independence, both will become much closer in their hearts,” he added.

The next posting will cover the stories of people who work for them and work for peace.

Jungle? Heartless modern society? Of course, it is. But I heard there are people who pray for the world. In fact, I have been having a hard time these days. In the news, murders, accidents, and crimes are never stopped, and What if I become a target of crime? Whenever I think of this, I pray. Today I saw this YouTube clip, when this fear was coming. What were they doing? They were praising. Also they danced and danced. They danced for themselves. Don’t care others, and It seemed happy to get together. The dance with beat was very natural. It was not fancy. But The Liveliness of Africa!!! They shared the prayer points, joined hands and prayed together.

  • America – China, Europe etc.
  • Effects will be global (Economic, Socio-political)
  • Rain – countries facing the droughts
  • Just governments – promoting people’s rights, freedom and responsibilities. Entrenching equality and security for all
  • Strife – created by greed, hate, religious intolerance and political rivalry, consequently creating refugees and resistance movements.

(http://www.peacestep.com/2018/05/09/resolving-conflicts-between-north-and-south-korea/) Kim Jong Un wrote “a new history begins now” and “an age of peace, at the starting point of history.”

But suddenly clouds are gathering on the horizon. President Donald Trump sent an official letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to cancel the summit. President Trump said he knew the anger and public hostility of North Korea’s recent remarks. Especially, he said “You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used.” This was a warning remark. Do you know the story of the late Gu Ji-in?

Earlier this year, an adult woman in her 20s died on a family trip. There was a hidden secret in the family trip. Its purpose is for coercive religious
conversion program, not real travel. Sadly, the late Ms. Gu was choked by blocking her mouth and nose at 5:40 p.m. on December 30 2017.

South Korea is a country where freedom of religion and thought is guaranteed by the constitution. But it was a sad event in which she was killed by her beloved family during a coercive conversion program, just because she was not a member of the mainstream religious body. Unfortunately, these conversion programs have happened and continue to increase.

It also stressed the importance of cooperation from major regional partners, including Australia, in order to achieve substantial results in the upcoming negotiations.

In response, Deputy Maude said, “We expect the Panmunjeom Declaration and the North-Korea USA Summit to be implemented as soon as possible, while supporting the Korean government’s efforts to develop a complete denuclearization and a permanent peace regime.”

North Korean Nuclear Issue can not be the subject of bargaining

The Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said, “Even now North Korea should show the truth and reality of its denuclearization commitments.” and stressed that “Until North Korea takes verifiable, complete and irreversible denuclearization steps, economic and diplomatic pressures from the United States, Australia and the international community will continue to be maximized.”

The Australian Secretary of Defense Christopher Pyne pointed, “Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a top priority for both the United States and Australia, and the denuclearization defined by North Korea is not a measure entirely corresponding to our national interests. This is possible only when the North has sincerity.”

This day, President Donald Trump earlier sent an official letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to cancel the summit. President Trump said he knew the anger and public hostility of North Korea’s recent remarks. Especially, he said “You’re talking about your nuclear capability” but “I pray to God that that (our nuclear capability) will never be used because we are so strong and powerful” This was a warning remark.

Rory Medcalf, the president of the Australian National University said, “we think we need to make every effort to attract North Korea to a legal-based order.” He added, “If someone has to play an additional role in communicating with North Korea (with the U.S. etc.), Australia may be a potential country to do so.”

Peter Jennings, the executive director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), said in interview “we believe that the possibility of CVID (a complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization) of North Korea is low” and claimed “the North Korea does not conduct any missile or nuclear tests, but it still develops nuclear capability.”

At the same time, he added, “we need to build a reliable management mechanism in the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) by increasing communication and contact with North Korea.”

The problem is a credible follow-up measure. Action should be taken to build trust. This agreement could bear fruit if North Korea and the United States continue to engage in direct talks, build trust one by one, and establish liaison offices in Pyongyang and Washington in the near future.

When this happens, we believe that it will be a great blessing for all mankind beyond the Korean Peninsula. Former East Germany Prime Minister Lothar de Maizière, who achieved reunification, said that “Reunification was the will of heaven. It happens like a miracle when human endeavor is met with internal and external conditions.” The unification of the Korean Peninsula will be natural, if people’s aspirations and the meaning of heaven are gathering, just like East and West Germany. If so, it is the duty of leaders of religion and politics to move the minds of the world toward reunification.

ICAN is the abbreviation for International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. Their mission is to turn atmosphere of disarmament debate. Founders of ICAN were inspired by the success of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Successfully on 7 July 2017, The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is adopted at the United Nations by a vote of 122-1! The ICAN said ‘TPNW‘ is “a landmark international agreement that outlaws, categorically, the worst weapons of mass destruction and establishes a pathway to their elimination.

But since adoption, it was criticized for non-binding.
When voted of 122-1, one third of 193 U.N. member countries boycotted the vote. ‘Authorized’ nuclear nations, U.S, Russia, China, UK, France boycotted. Also ‘Unauthorized’ nuclear nations, India, Pakistan,  Israel, North Korea boycotted. The number of actual signature is 53 countries. So actually we can’t expect the whole effect. But the only way to eliminate World War III is to eliminate all nuclear weapons. I am reminded of Gandhi’s quotes. “There is no path to peace. Peace is the path.”

Reaction of The United States and Russia

United Nations Trump TPNW NPT Norwegian Nobel Committee Konstantin Kosachev Kim Jong-Un ICAN HWPL ground-breaking efforts Gandhi CTBT 2017 Nobel Peace Prize     The U.S. reacted coldly. The U.S. State Department said “Unfortunately, we are seeing a deterioration in the overall security environment and growing nuclear capabilities of certain states. This treaty will not make the world more peaceful, will not result in the elimination of a single nuclear weapon, and will not enhance any state’s security.” The U.S., Britain and France said the prohibition wouldn’t work and would end up disarming their nations.
“This treaty will not make the world peaceful

The head of the Russia Federation Council Committee on international Affairs Konstantin Kosachev said, “This is now the real front of struggle for peace, not the romance of a nuclear-free future we all, probably, too would like to.” Also it is“not only misleading but also very dangerous opinion, which stimulates the proliferation of weapons and undermines the process of international disarmament.”

“Nuclear weapons are illegal. Threatening to use nuclear weapons is illegal. Having nuclear weapons, possessing nuclear weapons, developing nuclear weapons, is illegal, and they need to stop.”

HWPL’s DPCW vs TPNW

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE 2017 Nobel Peace Prize Why can ICAN win? United Nations Trump TPNW NPT Norwegian Nobel Committee Konstantin Kosachev Kim Jong-Un ICAN HWPL ground-breaking efforts Gandhi CTBT 2017 Nobel Peace Prize First, TPNW vs NPT
TPNW contributed to the continued role of the NPT, emphasizing its “vital role in promoting international peace and security”.
  • There is the distinction between states entitled to possess such weapons and non-nuclear weapon states in NPT. But in TPNW it is not.
  • The TPNW also forbids states party to the treaty from allowing “any stationing, installation or deployment” of nuclear weapons on their territory, a prohibition that is not explicitly included in the NPT
  • States party to the TPNW are prohibited from conducting nuclear tests, while the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) has not yet entered into force
Beyond Nuclear Disarmament

Do you know HWPL‘s DPCW(the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War)? The purpose of DPCW is to end the war. If so, the nuclear disarmament is a natural consequence. Actually DPCW has an article of elimination of nuclear weapons. I know many people think it is a naive desire. But the success of ICAN already show you ‘the world is changing‘. Simply we just walked the path to peace.

  • 2. States should not produce, assist in, encourage, or induce; the production of weapons of mass destruction, inter alia, chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, or weapons capable of causing indiscriminate or widespread and unnecessary suffering, or weapons incompatible with international humanitarian law.
  • 3. States should take measures to ensure that existing weapons of mass destruction, weapons capable of causing widespread and unnecessary suffering and weapons incompatible with international humanitarian law are gradually dismantled or destroyed. States should cooperate in disarmament and the reduction of arms stockpiles, ideally under international supervision. Decommissioned weapons manufacturing facilities should be repurposed, so that they may serve purposes that are beneficial to humanity in general.
