Together We Make a Difference

The World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (3rd WARP) Summit, which was first held in 2014, has been held annually in Seoul. Each year, influential people from all around the world meet in South Korea. HWPL  was acknowledged for substantial and practical way to achieve peace. Actually, people who come to the Peace Festival are all moving. They can feel ‘Peace waves‘, which also be called ‘the heart of peace’, deep down in the heart. This time, I introduce ‘Peace parade‘ and finale ‘Arirang of Peace‘ performance. The peace parade showed how global peace is being achieved in accordance with the 10 articles and 38 clauses of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War.

“In the case of the tank, a key point to take notice of is how the cold and lethal weapons of death are transformed into agricultural tools that help people and give them joy. So, it becomes a world where there are no longer any weapons that kill people. In the case of the unification train, it shows how the unification of Korea, which is the world’s only divided nation, is able to give hope.

This is symbolized by the creation of a unification train which would allow people to go anywhere, not caring whether it is in South or North.”

“During the proclamation of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War, Chairman Lee of HWPL stated that we must not create weapons that are to be used for war any longer, but instead should transform them into tools that are beneficial for humanity. These ideas have been a great inspiration for my work.

So, the main gun on the top of the tank was replaced with a golden trumpet that would be used to announce the news of peace. As I am aware that Chairman Lee has personally experienced the pain of the Korean War as a veteran, so much inspiration was received through his words and actions.”

Going along with the lyrics of “Arirang of Peace,” it was like seeing the blueprint of a new era and “entering the new world of peace” that is without war and terrorism.

“I had many thoughts about what kind of heart I should be preparing for this performance with if things became hard or difficult. However, as I watched my teammates and everyone, including myself, preparing for the performance for the sake of peace and not for personal gain or pleasure, my heart became ever more eager for peace and I worked even harder while practicing.”

“Our performance is a concert called Arirang Fantasy of Peace. It is a performance that expresses the idea of a peace that does not discriminate anyone, even though nationality, race, culture and religion may all be different. It brings together a traditional Korean song with traditional instruments, dances martial arts and other elements showing a harmonized global village full of excitement. This concert is a peace festival that represents the global village that will live in harmony and create peace.

It is during the performance of Ganggangsullae(강강술래), a traditional Korean dance, in the Arirang of Peace where one of our team members steps across the connected backs and shoulders of the others. This clearly demonstrates how a beautiful reality of peace is achieved through the combined sacrifice and effort of everyone involved.

Therefore, during practices not even one person could think selfishly, but instead had to willingly lend their back and shoulders. So, we carefully practiced with the mindset that I myself must hold hands and create peace along with everyone else.”

I should be dead~” One grandmother, terminally ill with lung cancer(Stage 4) said. I’m a medical student. Since doctors stood at the crossroads of life and death, It seems to think more about ‘death‘. Anyone, who are sentenced to death by disease, has no choice but to sob deeply. Frankly, the death is difficult to deal well with for whoever. When I stay at patient’s room, I can see all kinds of religions, Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestantism, Hinduism, Muslim, Atheism, Irreligion. They are so in fear of death. But I’m helpless. I can’t help them. I only can prolong their life for a few year. Everything is because of ‘Ignorance‘.

Beware of false knowledge

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE Profound questions at the crossroads of life and death religions Protestantism Muslim lung cancer Irreligion Hinduism George Bernard Shaw crossroads of life and death Catholicism Buddhism Beware of false knowledge Atheism     The reason we are enveloped by fear for death is ‘Ignorance‘. Not only we didn’t know death well, but also we didn’t really think about it. You can think “What can I do if everything I believed is wrong?” or you want to believe you’re right. But you must keep in mind “Beware of false knowledge. It is more dangerous than ignorance.“, George Bernard Shaw said. If you know exactly, the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32) You can feel relieved. In the Christian world now, everyone knew that ‘If people die, immediately they live in heaven or hell forever.’ Have you ever have a question? If so, what should our ancestors who died before the spread of the Christian faith do? It is so unfair. Is it God unfair? Nope. Maybe, I’m wrong.

The hibiscus is the national flower of Fiji. Fiji is an island country in Melanesia. Fiji’s main attractions to tourists are white sandy beaches and aesthetically pleasing islands with all-year-round tropical weather. In peace education, children of Fiji stick flowers on the picture of the tank which symbolize war and conflict. Why? They wished for achieving peace in the world. Children don’t know nothing. They know it clearly. Maybe they know it better than us, adults. “Peace is good and war is bad.” Very simple. Maybe, we don’t need other things, social, economic and political issues, complex and chronic problems. We must keep our children’s heart.

I think peace is having tolerance, respect and love each other. By loving each other and respecting each other we can find how we can stop fighting in the classroom too.– Salemba, one of the students.

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE DPCW Article 9 – Religion, ethnic identity and peace WARP Summit 2017 Religion Peace ethnic identity DPCW Article 9 DPCW     1. States should engage in multilateral consultations to deal with situations where differences attributable to religion or ethnicity pose a threat to peace so that necessary remedial action may be taken and to identify the root causes of a situation causing tension between different religious or ethnic groups, in order to adopt necessary measures to promote mutual understanding between the groups concerned.

2. States should take measures to ensure that religious belief or ethnic identity are not utilised as a pretext for gross and systematic acts of violence. In circumstances where individuals or groups perpetrate or assist in such acts in the name of their religion, states should take adequate measures that lead to the prosecution and punishment of such activities.

3. Recognising the threat to peaceful coexistence that violent religious extremism may cause, states should implement, in good faith, legal measures against individuals or groups attempting to perpetrate or assist in gross and systematic acts of violence in the name of religion. Such measures should, in extreme cases, include the proscription of faith groups – including sects or cults – that perpetrate acts of violence against the territorial integrity and political independence of any state.

The very work that we are pursuing is the work of healing of nations. Once implemented, this Law will be engraved in the hearts of many people to have a peaceful life. Chairman Lee

The Spirit of Remembrance Day “Face it”

What is Remembrance Day?

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE The Spirit of Remembrance Day "Face it" We Shall Keep the Faith Remembrance Day red poppy Poppy Day November 11 Moina Michael John McCrae In Flanders Fields First World War November 11 is Remembrance Day. It is sometimes known as Poppy Day. Remembrance Day is a memorial day for Commonwealth of Nations’s armed forces who died in the First World War(1914-1918). They carried out their mission by strenuous effort. Do you know what the symbol of this is? It is a Remembrance poppy. Surprisingly, It is a artificial flower. Why is this? It is due to the poem “In Flanders Fields” written by Canadian John McCrae, MD, physician.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE The Spirit of Remembrance Day "Face it" We Shall Keep the Faith Remembrance Day red poppy Poppy Day November 11 Moina Michael John McCrae In Flanders Fields First World War     When one person read this poem, Moina Michael, a professor at the University of Georgia, swore to wear a red poppy. So people started to wear a red poppy on Remembrance Day. She wrote one poem which was filled with everything. It is a “We Shall Keep the Faith“.

We Shall Keep the Faith

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet – to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.

We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.

And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We’ll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.

“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE The Spirit of Remembrance Day "Face it" We Shall Keep the Faith Remembrance Day red poppy Poppy Day November 11 Moina Michael John McCrae In Flanders Fields First World War Throughout the world, sincere people celebrated that day in many places . I brought this case because they explains the spirit very well. The Richmond Youth Honour Choir (RYHC) is singing for peace on 11 November. RYHC’s artistic director, Heidi Epp said “It is important to remember the tragedies and losses of war, the suffering of many including veterans, their families, civilians and, well, everyone” I think it is very hard. Why? Because it is too difficult to remind these memories. It maybe pierce your heart. Coming face to face is to be our power and our foundation. After some time, flowers surely begin to blossom.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. / At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.”

At this time of every year, the news of  winning the award are abuzz. This year was no exception. This year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2017 to ICAN. ICAN is the abbreviation for International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. Nobel Committee said “They are receiving the award for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons.” But still many people wondered ‘Why ICAN?’. I can understand them. Because me too.

“The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: /- – -/ one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” –  the will of Alfred Nobel

Why can ICAN win?

ICAN  is a coalition of non-governmental organizations in one hundred countries promoting adherence to and implementation of the United Nations nuclear weapon ban treaty. It has 468 partner organizations in 101 countries(by ICAN homepage) The amazing  thing is that ICAN was launched on April 2007! Now do you understand? There are a lot of peace groups to contribute really hard toward the world. Just last year, there are a lot of a prominent candidates. It is a last year posting of Nobel peace prize. Here : 2016 Nobel peace prize : Colombia peace agreement “It is passed. Now remaining task is ‘implementation’ Finally we could know ‘The Norwegian Nobel Committee want to tell something‘.  The message is about nuclear weapons. The North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un maybe contributed much to Nobel Peace Prize.

A STEP TOWARDS PEACE 2017 Nobel Peace Prize Why can ICAN win? Their mission is to turn atmosphere of disarmament debate. Founders of ICAN were inspired by the success of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Successfully on 7 July 2017, The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is adopted at the United Nations by a vote of 122-1! The ICAN said ‘TPNW‘ is “a landmark international agreement that outlaws, categorically, the worst weapons of mass destruction and establishes a pathway to their elimination.

But since adoption, it was criticized for non-binding.
When voted of 122-1, one third of 193 U.N. member countries boycotted the vote. ‘Authorized’ nuclear nations, U.S, Russia, China, UK, France boycotted. Also ‘Unauthorized’ nuclear nations, India, Pakistan,  Israel, North Korea boycotted. The number of actual signature is 53 countries. So actually we can’t expect the whole effect. But the only way to eliminate World War III is to eliminate all nuclear weapons. I am reminded of Gandhi’s quotes. “There is no path to peace. Peace is the path.”

“This treaty will not make the world peaceful

The head of the Russia Federation Council Committee on international Affairs Konstantin Kosachev said, “This is now the real front of struggle for peace, not the romance of a nuclear-free future we all, probably, too would like to.” Also it is“not only misleading but also very dangerous opinion, which stimulates the proliferation of weapons and undermines the process of international disarmament.”

“Nuclear weapons are illegal. Threatening to use nuclear weapons is illegal. Having nuclear weapons, possessing nuclear weapons, developing nuclear weapons, is illegal, and they need to stop.”

TPNW contributed to the continued role of the NPT, emphasizing its “vital role in promoting international peace and security”.
  • There is the distinction between states entitled to possess such weapons and non-nuclear weapon states in NPT. But in TPNW it is not.
  • The TPNW also forbids states party to the treaty from allowing “any stationing, installation or deployment” of nuclear weapons on their territory, a prohibition that is not explicitly included in the NPT
  • States party to the TPNW are prohibited from conducting nuclear tests, while the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) has not yet entered into force
Beyond Nuclear Disarmament

Do you know HWPL‘s DPCW(the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War)? The purpose of DPCW is to end the war. If so, the nuclear disarmament is a natural consequence. Actually DPCW has an article of elimination of nuclear weapons. I know many people think it is a naive desire. But the success of ICAN already show you ‘the world is changing‘. Simply we just walked the path to peace.

  • DPCW Article 1 Prohibition of the threat or use of force
  • 3. States should prohibit any act or threat of violence, whatever its motives or purposes, that occurs for the advancement of an individual or collective criminal agenda.
  • DPCW Article 2 – War potential
  • 2. States should not produce, assist in, encourage, or induce; the production of weapons of mass destruction, inter alia, chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, or weapons capable of causing indiscriminate or widespread and unnecessary suffering, or weapons incompatible with international humanitarian law.
  • 3. States should take measures to ensure that existing weapons of mass destruction, weapons capable of causing widespread and unnecessary suffering and weapons incompatible with international humanitarian law are gradually dismantled or destroyed. States should cooperate in disarmament and the reduction of arms stockpiles, ideally under international supervision. Decommissioned weapons manufacturing facilities should be repurposed, so that they may serve purposes that are beneficial to humanity in general.
