Journalists Who Change the World

The present state of journalism

One media, dailytrust, said ‘For journalists, 2017 represented misfortune of journalism’. Why? I wonder why, too. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) says at least 81 reporters were killed and violence against media soared last year. Also, more than 70 media companies were closed in Venezuela. Also, the Guardian reported that “Global press freedom plunges to worst level this century” mainly due to government censorship, crime targeted at journalists and financial pressures associated with the growth of the internet. What do you think we should do? They are not frustrated. They want to respond to such challenge and turn it into an opportunity. So, some journalists around the world in collaboration with an international NGO have been seeking ways to enhance press freedom through the international media network and peace journalism in relation.

HWPL : Where should we go?

In 2017, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), said in a statement recently that it formed a series Media Forums to establish a working group of journalists around the world. Why? It want to research the flow of journalism globally and redefine the duty of journalism.

On September 17, 2017, at the World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Summit, “the Conference for Global Peace Media Network – Freedom of the Press and International Peace Media Community Initiative” was held with 100 journalists from 50 countries around the world. What is important is that the establishment of media agencies concentrating on peace can raise public awareness, and more and more journalists should participate in delivering news of peace and settlement of the conflict rather than conflict itself. I sincerely ask journalists to change my future.

Interfaith dialogue with religious representatives

Interfaith dialogue : The critical point

On January 19, an interfaith dialogue with religious representatives from Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Hinduism discussed the role of religion in making a peaceful world. Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), an international NGO affiliated with the UN ECOSOC, held the 32nd interfaith dialogue in Bangkok.

“We talk about dialogues based on scriptures, which is very important part of peacebuilding to individual person. It is also important to understand that we have to build peace within ourselves first, the inner quality of person,” said Sathit Kumarn, president of Ramakrishna Vedanta Society of Thailand and advisor the National Legislative Assembly in Thailand.

In the meeting, the panel discussion was carried on. “The founder of religion (The Messenger) can’t teach from his own knowledge, they have to teach only from the will of the heaven which is revealed to them from God,” said Dr. Husni Hamad. Also, one pastor said “The founder of religion should not teach from his own knowledge but on the basis of the which the person has received from heaven.”

“What is required is to think about how to make people as human being and teach the values of human being. It can be establishing religious studies in schools and build programs regarding human development together with spiritual enhancement,” said Mr. Kumarn.

“On August 18, 2016, a five-year-old Syrian boy, Omran Daqneesh, was famous for Aleppo’s ‘boy in the ambulance’ and Aleppo’s bloodied boy.”

“Om October 21, 2016, a young refugee from Somalia who came to Germany to seek asylum and begin a new life in Europe was convinced by Neo-Nazis to throw himself from a tower block in Schmoelln, eastern Germany.”

A former US Special Forces, David Eubank, 56, was running into the rain of bullets to save one children with a pink ribbon. He said, “If I die doing this, my wife and kids would understand”. Also I like this word, “I believe God sent me here, and I don’t think about security… but I always ask myself if I’m doing it out of pride.”

A photographer, Abd Alkader Habak, was dashing towards an ambulance with the child and his camera in his arms. He said “This child was firmly holding my hand and looking at me”. And at another shot, he was sobbing on his knees near the boy’s body. “I was overcome with emotion,” he told CNN. “What I and my colleagues witnessed is indescribable.”

Three Children of Syria : Save our children

Do you remember ‘Alan Kurdi‘? You already know it. He appeared dead on the beach. While trying to go to Europe to avoid civil war, his mother(35) and his brother(5) were drowned. Then all the world wanted to help Syria refugees.

Do you remember ‘Omran Daqneesh‘? He was rescued after being buried in collapsed buildings in Syria Aleppo. One picture shocked people all over the world. He was sitting in an ambulance with stained with blood and dust. I cannot repress my astonishment.

Bana Alabed, who broadcasted the current situation in real time, is also same. She got 233,653 followers. Her first words were “I need peace”. It was retweeted over 1000 times.

This three children informed the world of the misery of the Syrian civil war. They changed world’s movement for Syria.

What can we do?

He was overwhelmed. Habak collapsed. We can do everything!!!!! It will not end in one moment of sentiment!! We can do it and It has to be me!

KOSOVO – A Professor of International Law at the University of Prishtina in Kosovo introduced the principles of the DPCW to the university students, the future leaders of Kosovo, Albania and Macedonia, who then gave their signatures of support.

ZAMBIA – At the Safe World Trust School in Zambia, in the presence of journalists, religious leaders, and other important societal figures, participants discussed the current peace activities in Zambia and expressed their support for the DPCW.

NEPAL – Students at Narayani English Public Higher Secondary School in Nepal recognized the peace work of HWPL and IPYG and painted their ideas and thoughts regarding peace.

MONGOLIA – In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia Khishigsuren Saranbolor artists and members of IPYG painted murals together at the Ulaanbaatar 31st kindergarten with the hope of peace. #LegislatePeace

Active footsteps for peace in Egypt

Nowadays of Egypt

Islamic extremism and terrorism posed a threat to the Middle East. Although people want to cope with the threat, there are many hardships of peace. Why? We had precedents. The 2017 Palm Sunday church bombings killed 45 people and the 2014 Tata bus bombing resulted from a suicide bomber carrying explosives. So, the government of Egypt declared a state of emergency. How long will the war be? Frankly, we are fed up with death, misery and sorrow. Have you ever been experienced? It is the most painful experience. Even in such a horrible situation, the flower of peace is blooming.

Two representatives of HWPL International Law Peace Committee

They dedicated their efforts to the promotion of peace projects based on the spirit of the DPCW. Why? They love peace and participated in drafting the DPCW. What did they do? They helped supporting campaigns for DPCW to become national and international levels. And Media representatives do a role to report the news of peace to citizens in Middle East.

Dr. Said El Dakkak, Professor of International Law at Alexandria University, said “Now we have this declaration, we have this already drafted and launched, but the hard work has started now. We have to go further, all the way, in the ways of the national level, the international level through the civil organizations, and inter-governmental organizations.”

Mr. Kamal Khalifa Abdelrahman Mahmoud, President of the Arab Foundation for Development and Peace, has contributed to media power. He even founded Alsalamnews to cover the news of peace around the world, including those of HWPL. He said, “Peace in its general sense does not mean the absence of conflicts, but rather the process of rooting a set of values, attitudes, traditions and lifestyles based on full respect for the principles of sovereignty, human rights and fundamental freedoms, and on dialogue and cooperation among nations and cultures. We see that everything beautiful in life comes from peace.”

He introduced other Egyptian journalists who love peace to HWPL. The cool thing is that they decided to share the peace news with people in the region faster and more accurately. He is now planning to open ‘HWPL News’ to exclusively cover the news of peace for HWPL and the DPCW in the Arabic language. Egypt is now seeking to find a solution to peace for all humanity. The answer is already discovered. It is the DPCW. We need only just do! Do you hate peace? There is no one who doesn’t like peace. Then, you can just do it! The DPCW is the perfect solution to achieve peace.

Korea Peace Unification Forum

On November 30th, Korea Peace Unification Forum was held at the Korean National Assembly Member’s Conference Hall. Politicians and NGO representatives said what to do something. Also the Ambassadors to Korea are participated in this Forum from 12 countries including El Salvador, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Poland, and Laos. The purpose of Forum is to establish peacebuilding measures for the unification of Korea and global peace. What is the current state of the world? There are recent provocations from North Korea’s nuclear tests. Due to North Korea’s nuclear threat, the situation in the Korean peninsula is now at a crisis point more than ever before. War is terrific. Have you been engaged in warfare? Listen to a veteran.

In the panel discussions, the unification of the two Koreas was suggested by the ultimate resolution of Korean peninsula crisis. We are left with the choice of either a peaceful solution or a military solution. But It is difficult to resolve. How can we achieve the unification? We need practical ways to change the world.

President Chung continued, “Rather than creating peace through the passive means of just opposing the war, we need to realize an active concept of peace. The ultimate solution for North Korea’s nuclear threat and the North Korean problem is unification. It is now an urgent matter to prepare an active unification policy.”

PyeongChang 2018 Olympic : Keyword is Peace

The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be held in February next year. This video above is made for public relations. Its concept is highly acclaimed at home and abroad. It started from background that ‘AIs were defeated after a 10-year battle with humans’. Heroine main character is the last AI left in this world. Her name is ‘K 2018020925’. What does she do? She studied deeply ‘why humans won‘. What does she find? Emotion! Passion, sadness, joy, love. All of these appeared at a time in the feast, ごちそう, fiesta, 잔치(Janchi). They make the connection between the Seoul 1988 Olympics, the 2002 World Cup and 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. The meaning is that Korea gave thanks to nations who helped Korea and this peaceful janchi united all into one. The keyword is ‘Peace‘.

Desire for peace : Two big events

The last A.I. said ‘Why could AI not surpass humans?’ Now the core of PR video is coming out. ‘Was it not a desire for peace?’ In my opinion, there must be some reason. There are at least two things that I know. First, on December, 2016, 1.7 million people gathered in Candlelight rally, Seoul. Nationwide total is 2,320,000 people. It reminded me of William Shakespeare’s one quote that “How far that little candle throws his beams!”. The world was surprised by peaceful assembly culture and mature civic consciousness. People say “Don’t hit anyone even by flowers” The video said ‘The candle of peace lit has been carried over to the PyeongChang Olympic Torch and conveyed all over the world.’ I really love this sentence. Why War? HWPL’s Solutions

Second, 2017 3rd World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Summit was held by HWPL in Seoul, Korea. It is a annual event for peace. Each year, influential people from all around the world meet in South Korea.

HWPL was acknowledged for substantial and practical way to achieve peace. I am very proud of these Koreans. Their slogan is “Together for peace as messengers of peace” Why could human not cease war? The solutions of HWPL are ‘Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War(DPCW)’ and ‘The World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Office’.

Now ‘Legislate peace campaign’ is carried out. Since then, 705,000 signatures in more than 170 countries. And 117 schools from 8 different countries (as of July 2016) voluntarily became HWPL Peace Academies. In the short three years, the WARP Offices have seen rapid expansion with 218 offices now operating in 126 countries.

The 15th IAVE Asia-Pacific Conference 2017 for Peace Education

Educational Conference for Youth&Peace

The 15th IAVE Asia Pacific Regional Volunteer Conference & Youth Volunteer Conference was held at Malaysia, on 22 November 2017. The title is that ‘Power of Volunteerism: What have you changed?’. This conference was hosted by Yayasan Salam Malaysia, the biggest volunteer NGO in this area and attended by 610 people from 32 countries. The Youth Conference was inspired by one summit. They discussed for peace in session, the Region-Specific Discussion for the Implementation of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW). This peaceful summit is ‘3rd Annual Commemoration of the WARP Summit 2017′ held in September. At that time, nine Malaysian delegation members discussed action plans under the title of “Establishing Collaborative Governance for Peace“.

The International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) is an international NGO for volunteerism, founded in 1970. IAVE advocates interaction between the governments of each country and civil society.

Peace Education: The Spirit of Ownership for Humankind

HWPL delivered a keynote speech during the opening ceremony of the IAVE conference. One project director of the HWPL said, “The fact that we are the owner of our community, country and furthermore the human society that we belong to…this ownership is the very foundation of volunteerism. What values are sowed in young peoples’ hearts decides our future. Thus, peace education is the most powerful way to inherit the legacy of peace to the future generations for them to obtain this sense of ownership” I think we need many friends who are man of action. But I should look back me first. That’s why peace education is needed.

Wafa Aimi, a student of international law at USIM, said “The invention of a legal framework and all these initiatives will give a big impact in order to foster peace at both national and international levels. The DPCW would be a plausible check and balance instrument to limit the inherent rights for a state to resort to a war consonant with other considerations. These are the catalysts of positive changes and it will eventually show its path for developing peace processes in our world. The international community needs a wide-ranging legal approach that can guide and help the citizens, irrespective of their ethnicities, nationalities and religions.

“Although challenges are inevitable in the form of ethnic hatred and religious conflict…but as quoted from HWPL Chairman’s speech at 3rd WARP Summit 2017, “This precious and indispensable gift was bestowed upon the human race as a legacy from heaven. Who must protect our world? It is us, the family of the global village. Neither wealth nor power can be passed down as a heritage if we fail to stop wars. Mankind and our Earth will share a fatal destiny.” I hope that more youth become powerful ‘peace messengers‘.

Peace Conference of Religious Leaders for Reunification of Korea

For Reunification of Korea

What the era is it now? North Korea is constantly threatening with nuclear weapons, and there are still wars everywhere around the world. Someone’s family dies, and those who survive are screaming. On November 25th, 1,200 social representatives gathered at the “1st Peace Conference of Religious Leaders in Southeastern and Southwestern Regions for the Reunification of Korea” Their purpose is to discuss spreading a culture of peace and preparing action plans for the peaceful unification of the two Koreas in Daegu Metropolitan City, South Korea. Although peaceful events are considered to be a good cause, it is easy to criticize them for being only symbolic. But No need to worry!

Practical and substantial HWPL

It is because HWPL which hosted this conference has been evaluated as a practical and substantial peace group. It is understandable even though you know a little bit about their movements. Chairman of Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) which is under the UN ECOSOC and the organizer of this conference gave a message. Chairman Lee proposed the formation of a civil society network at the global level, as well as the legalization of the 10 Articles and 38 Clauses of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) and the World Alliance of Religions’ Peace Offices(WARP Office).

“We are one nation and one people. Why is it that we cannot step on our own land? I also cordially ask all citizens to become peace messengers to achieve international peace as a whole.” – Chairman Lee

Social & Religious leaders cry out

At the conference, Gi Woong Son, President of the Korea Institute for National Unification, advised that we should open the eyes and ears of the people in North Korea with the values of freedom, democracy, human rights and welfare. Emphasizing the role of civil society, he said “Consistent efforts for reaching North Koreans through humanitarian approaches including religion, culture, art, sports and the environment should be carried out. These areas can avoid transferability of capital misused for military capabilities of the North.”

Ven. Bup Ryun, chief priest at Kumdang Temple, pointed out that religious leaders are responsible for leading the work of peace and that one way of engaging in such a task is through HWPL’s World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Offices which promote the collective peacebuilding efforts by religions. “Now is the time religious leaders stand at the front for peace, a long-cherished wish of all humanity. The wall blocking religions will collapse as a result of our efforts of understanding based on a comparative study of religious scriptures.”
